My Sony RM-AX4000 is about 5 years old and the volume and channel keys are starting to fail. Since Sony no longer makes this unit anymore, what would be a comparable remote to replace it? Right now I am using the Sony RMVLZ620 which will do all my macro functions and everything else the 4000 could do, but I miss the LCD touch screen. Has anyone had any experience with the Acoustic Research ARRX18G XSight or any others at a reasonable price that would compare with the RX4000?

Have you read my review on the Xsight? It's dirt cheap right now and probably an extremely good value for money, but you should read the review so you know what you're getting... and not getting. Otherwise, the market has kind of shrunk and in that price range you otherwise only really have Harmony remotes, or you might look to some of the lower-end non-computer-programmable URCs.

Personally I think the Xsight Touch, at it's present price, is an absolute bargain - I've been been using one for about two years now and am well impressed with it.

As Daniel mentions, however, it does have a few idiosyncrasies - and if you do get one make sure you keep your fingers well away from the touch-screen when inserting the battery. I managed to change the default language to Danish, which took not a little bit of head scratching to correct.

I was looking at the Xsight, especially after I read Daniel's review. They are currently selling for a cheap price on Amazon, but when I read the reviews the latest one that was posted today said they are being discontinued. I haven't called AR to confirm it, but here is the post:

"This product has been discontinued by Acoustic Research (AudioVox).
I called in to get support because the RF extender for it wasn't available on any site. They told me the RF extender has been discontinued and they're not replacing it with anything else. I asked them if they have a remote that will replace the ARRX18G and they stated they're discontinuing the XSight line and pretty much getting out of the remote business. "

If this is the case I would be concerned on the support.

Well, in this case Audiovox is simply the North American reseller of UEI, so I'd expect the programming website to be around for a while, but there's always the risk that at some point in the future online support will be discontinued. It's happened to two other remotes in the past, and is the reason for my opposition to the entire internet-based concept.

But at the price point... still seems like a good deal. :-)

I did call Audiovox today and the support supervisor did confirm that they are discontinuing their current remotes and do not know if they will have any new series coming out. They have also discontinued making their RF extenders. He did say they will continue to offer support, but for how long is unknown. Currently Amazon is selling them for under $53 which is a good bargain.
