Hey y'all,

Long, very long, time no see. I honestly don't know if any of my old buddies still come on here or not. Haven't looked around to see who I could remember.

For those of you who are newer than I, well at least by sign up time, I am one of the original owners of the Philips Pronto TSU-1000 and TSU-2000. Just recently, well a year ago, I purchased a TSU-7500. Nice up grade from 16 shades of gray to 256 colors. However, now is the time for an other change.

Even from the start, I wasn't too happy with the rather wide stance of the remote. Specially for my girl friend when she wants to simply use it to watch tv. Little too cumbersome in the hands. So I am looking for a remote that we, as a general population, is use to. As for the width of it. BUT I want to keep the touch screen LCD feature. And of course the ability to program the buttons, both by IR learning and by data base. I also would love to keep the ability to program by PC. Because that is, in my opinion, the only way that programming an advance remote should be done. Well with a little on device tweaking is allowed. :-)

I am sadden to hear that Philips is backing out, but that is ok with me. I wasn't actually looking at a brand new remote at this point. So what do you all think I should be looking into?

Here are the features that I want in a listed format...

--Slim remote
--Touch LCD
--Program the buttons, by both IR learning and data base. Prefer IR learning
--Program by PC is a must

I am still a Pioneer freak, and thanks to me. The "on with input select" in the Pronto section is still there. :-) Thank you Daniel for posting those up when I sent them to you, all those many years ago. lol

Thank you for your time,

KOT

Oh, and hard buttons too. Like navigation buttons with an "ok" button either in the center or out side of the up/down, left/right. Perferabilty in the middle. And a numerical pad please.

Thanks,

No mention of budget, but as a general everyday remote this is pretty good . . .

Doesn't tick all the boxes, but it is simple to use and set up. Check out Daniel's review.

A more "sophisticated" choice (certainly more expensive) might be this . . .

. . . but I cannot comment on usability as I've not tried one.

P.S. Yep I'm still here.

Can't really help, in the end I have always been a Pronto man so I don't know much on the Nevo and URC solutions. And I am not a fan of the limited Harmony configuration.

I guess this was more for me to say welcome back

Well actually. I am a Pronto fan myself. Thank you djy for the suggestions, but after looking them over. I am gonna say the TSU-9300 is going to be for me. Yeah I know, there are no numbers. But it's like someone trying to get me a car other than from GM. It's either Chevy for Cadillac for me. lol

Anyways, if I understand this correctly. The tsu-9300 is the only one, with in a $200 or less price range thanks djy, that will support my other "wants/needs"? I was looking into the 9400, but it doesn't appear to have that single handed feel or even pc customization. Or am I missing something with that PC thing?

Also, where can I get the PE Pro?

Where did you get that price from?

I know they might have them reduced now they are discontinued but $200 for a $800 remote sounds to good to be true!

The TSU 9300, 9400, 9600 and 9800 all use the same software. The 9400 has ProntoScript and 9300 does not (the 9300 is not as good as the 9400).

Also, where can I get the PE Pro?

This is where my nickname comes into play quite well. :-) It was a typo.

Can you briefly explain to me this ProntoScript? Advantages and what not?

Hey great, thank you. Hopefully I'll be able to play around with it, with out the remote. I downloaded something last week and I can't play with it unless I have a remote. How I missed this one, is beyond me.

King of typos,

Opinions vary, but I prefer the TSU9400 screen. Depending on how old your eyes are, the slightly larger and clearer TSU9400 screen might be a benefit

ProntoScript is a version of JavaScript, customized for the Pronto's.

Part of that download is a simulator. As long as you do not try to use any online resources or the two-way accessories, the simulator will allow you to test your programs, including ProntoScript. If you are not afraid to get your hands dirty, there is an unsupported way to simulate some network features too.

ProntoScript is not required, but with ProntoScript you are mostly limited by your own imagination. As basic ProntoScript starters, you could change button text, or make buttons visible and invisible based on a series of button presses.

While there is no web browser, user contributed scripts, such as fetching the weather, are available.

You can use the wizard to build your first program in a few minutes. After you become more familiar with the programming environment you can start being more exotic -- with or without ProntoScript.

Anything you could do with a Pronto you should be able to do without it. But it helps the Pronto do a lot more. In the end it is a real programming language and the Pronto, with it, is a lot more like a computer.

Just googled the TSU-9400 and it looks like it goes for around 1k. Have you seen the RTI T2-C+? You'd have all of your hard buttons and the touchscreen too.

Downside: You'd need to purchase it from a dealer in your area though and the programming software is dealer only. But, you should be able to purchase the remote and have it programmed for around the same price range as the 9400.

If you're anything like me though, you'll probably sacrifice the hard buttons for a copy of your own programming software.

Just wanted to point out a nice remote with all of the features you are looking for.

You may also want to look into URC as I'm told you can sometimes recieve the software if you ask the dealer up front for it. If he says no, call another, and so on.
