Well, I'm revamping my house, and adding a few extra things along the way. I'd like to have a remote to control it all.

1st I'd like it to have zone capability. Living room, bed room, rec room, kitchen, ect.

2nd RF & IR. IR for the TV's power command, also while sending RF to the amps and controllers tucked away in the basement. So macro commands are needed as well.

3rd I'm adding X10 to the house, it will run off my media / web server. So I'd like it to be able to talk to my computer. Either WiFi, or RF. That way I can control the media center side from the remote as well. Along with a few simple x10 commands. The majority of the x10 is just for while I'm away and turning on some lights for motion.

4th I don't want to spend a small fortune on the remote. I've been looking at the possibility of using a PDA for control with some 3rd party software.

Another thought was to use my media computer to blast IR to the TV and monitors. I do have remote desktop on my iphone, and was thinking about doing the same with a psp.

As I'm up in the air with all this, and keep going round and round with all the control possibilities, any advice / experience would be helpful.

Have fun with your X-10 and PDA remote. Sounds like a good combo.

I don't know what your budget is, but I think you would be making a mistake with X10. If you decide later on to rip everything out and use something else it will be more expensive than making the best decision you can make now.

You should look into Radio RA 2 (cheaper than Radio RA) as your lighting control system. Setting up a computer to do a home automation or control systems job will get ugly. I'm not a big fan of it because I dont think it's here yet. Yes, you could do HAI and control your home, but I thiink you should invest in a control system to tie in here.
