My parents have the dual room DISH Network system. This means that the remote located in the same room is IR, but the remote that works from another room is RF. The problem is, my Mom is pushing the wrong buttons all the time on the RF remote, and things get screwed up. My Dad's ability to recover from these mistakes is limited.

I would like to find an RF remote that I can program to only do the basics, like channel changes or volume control. It seems like all the simple universal remotes targeted for the elderly are IR, not RF.

Is there anything out there I can try, short of some high-end $200 Harmony remote?

I know this kind of question has been asked frequently, but not usually in the context of RF vs. IR.

Try the Nevo C3.

Hmm. That's like $300 isn't it? I was hoping for something more affordable. Those darn universal IR remotes are dirt cheap. Not so for RF it seems.

The cheapest RF remote is the URC RF-20.

You don't want to control the Dish unit DIRECTLY by RF, right? Because you can't do that...

Dish has a proprietary RF system which can not be used with any other remote.
I need control!

This means that if you are going to use a universal remote, then you have to have one with a RF base station.

Just a little FYI, a $200 remote is very far from being high-end. The average remote that most of us sell ranges in the $400-$900 range, and those are the middle of the line ones
