I am looking for a simple to use, brite, big button type remote for my in-laws.
"Dad" is more then capabile of using the universal we got last yearbut "Mom" has issues.
This is not a very complacated setup.
TIVO
Comcast cable
TV
DVD
and a 10 year old suround sound setup.

The remote I got them now was based on the "thumbs up and down" tivo commands.
Unfortunatly, switching between Tivo and Cable causes problems.

I am leaning twards a pronto and since money /is/ a issue a used 1000 or similar.

Support is a issue becouse they live 600 miles away.

What do you suggest??

TIA

Kevin

There is no simple to use bright big button remote thats capable of macro commands...when money is an issue. Your choices are hand held products like Harmony or URC or touchscreen products like Pronto. Your budget needs to be between $300-1000.

If you are talking about the pronto TS-1000 i doubt it will be a hit with the in-laws. Pro's are you can customize it with only the buttons you want/need. Con's are that its difficult to hold and use for most people.

If you are interested in rolling up your sleeves and doing this on the cheap you can try JP1 [Link: hifi-remote.com]

I like Prontos, but they are not cheap, the benefit of a touch screen is that you can make any button the size you want and you don't have useless buttons that make finding the right one easier. On the other hand they do need a lot of time to configure properly especially when you are talking custom set-up with large buttons.

there are some big button remotes, but I never used them so impossible for me to advise you on them.

This brings me back to my original thought. A pronto like touch screen that cost 3 to 400. They would need to have a couple of screens to navigate. One to turn on the stuff and switch between regular cable and "tivo" modes. Both modes would use up down chanel and number touchpad. the tivo interface is the only issue.

Which pronto / harmony provides the best tivo interface?

Thanks

Any remote, if programmed well, can provide what you are looking for. That's really what it boils down to - the quality of the programming and interface.
