I hope someone here can help.

The remote for my toshiba tv died a few months back after 8 years of faithful service. Recently we upgraded our sat tv to HD. The problem is the picture size is stuck on the widest settings and it's screwing up the beautiful HD picture.

I actually found a replacement but it didn't have the Pic Size button. I have found a replacement with the Pic Size button...but the dang things going to cost also $50.

There has to be a way I can cheat or fool the tv. I found the hex codes for the old remote but I havent got a clue what to do with them...

It would really be helpful not to mention saving me a good chunk of change if someone here could explain what I need to do with these hex code...

TIA

Tell us which Toshiba TV, because it determines which command numbers will work. Got a link to the hex codes?

We can probably get you going for around $20.

Oh, and what remote does you satellite TV have? Maybe we can make it work.

The hex codes show that this is a typical Toshiba TV, and nearly every universal remote will be able to control many of the functions. Have you tried simply setting up your Dish remote for Toshiba? If it has a button like wide, or zoom, or aspect, that may provide the Pic Size function.

The remotes made by Univeral Electronics can be customized to provide the Pic Size function. As far as I know, UEI remotes are the only low priced remotes which are capable of such modifications. The remotes are sold under the One for All brand (any will work), Radio Shack ( 15-100, 133,134,135, 2142,etc.), Comcast (any), some DirectTv, certain Vizio remotes, Atlas (any), Millenium, and certain RCA. You can buy some of these on eBay for less than the cost of shipping. If you buy one from a store, I recommend the RCA RCRP05B ($20 at BestBuy) or its sister remote, One for All OARP05S. These are new remotes, and they have a similar layout to most Dish remotes. But any UEI manufactured remote will work. Don't buy just any RCA remote; many models aren't made by UEI.

Use setup code 0156 (10156 in the remotes that want a 5 digit setup code). If the remote doesn't provide the Pic Size function out of the box, use the keymove procedure to assign Extended Function Code EFC 100 (00100 on some newer remotes) to whatever key reminds you of Pic Size. The keymove procedure:

After entering setup code TV 0156, choose a button that you want to have the Pic Size function assigned to. For this example, I'll call that button A. You can't assign EFCs to the Power button, the device (TV, CBL, etc.) buttons, or the Setup button.
1. press the TV button
2. press and hold the Setup button until the LED flashes twice.
3. press 9 - 9 - 4.
4. press the Setup button and then 100 (or 00100)
5. press the A button. At this point, if this procedure has been done correctly , the remote will give two blinks.

To clear the EFC from the key (perhaps because you wanted the original function back), replace step 4 and 5 above with
4. press the button you want to clear twice. - two blinks.

Good!
Of course, if any of the other TV codes (like discrete On or Off) look they might be useful, we can translate those into a EFC also.

3FG,

When I checked ebay, one seller that had specifications for the RCA RCRP05B listed the manufacturer as Thompson, Inc. Is that what you meant when you said
"Don't buy just any RCA remote; many models aren't made by UEI."?

-or-

Do you know if "all" of the RCRP05B models made by UEI?

Thanks,

Thomson is the owner of the RCA brand, and that brand is licenced to other companies. RCA no longer exists as an electronics company. So many RCA branded remotes aren't made by UEI (which itself is probably now owned by Audiovox, or maybe that is another branding exercise). "All" RCRP05B remotes are made by UEI, and more importantly have hardware and firmware that is well understood in the so-called JP1 community.

3FG,
Thanks a lot for your quick response! I can buy a RCRP05B with no worries now.
