I have four MX-700 remotes for all the TV's in my house. I love the layout of them. However, for the last several years I can only muddle through the MX-700 editor program (like most people). It can everything other remotes can do, but it just takes longer, sometimes a lot longer to get the application to behave and create macros.

So.... I am looking for a similarly designed remote but with easier to use software. Based on glowing reviews, one of my friends bought a Harmony 670. The task approach seems simple at first, but rather limiting when you want to do anything out of the scope of the software. And I didn't find a way to save the remote files onto my PC. I *think* it saved it online, which is a big no-no to me because I will want to buy several of these, and have fallback files when I edit and change things.

I don't know if the newer URC remotes have any better software, but I do like the look of the MX-880, MX-980, etc. Does the software handle macros and moving buttons around better than the MX-700 software?

What other remotes should I consider? I do indeed like the "classic" design of the MX-700 and the button layout, so that's the most important.

Your MX-700 software gives you complete control over how things operate. As you have discovered... wizard based software is something you wont ever be able to live with now that you have tasted the good koolaid.

Thew newer URC products have similar software to what you already have but some of the 'issues' have been worked out. The software, by design, is meant for installers so it can be difficult for end users. If you know exactly how your system is wired and why its wired that way then IMO you should be able to handle the programming.

Macros and button placement are very similar... with just about every PC programmable brand/model IMO. Google "MX-880 software" or whatever model and you can usually find a screenshot in google images like this one. It will give you an idea if what your up against.

39 is absolutely on target here. Why downgrade? Go with a setup that utilizes some creativity and customability. How about an MX-880 or 980? True they are pricier but I am sure you will be happier.

When purchased from us, yes, we provide the updateable versions of the Editor software.

I think the MX-880 may be a little easier to program than the MX-980. However, if you were able to learn the MX-700 on your own, the basic concepts are all the same, you just have more options available to you. We're also offering free programming with purchase, so that may be a benefit as well.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to call me for a free consultation.

So you are authorized to sell URC online, and you'll program for free?

I owned several MX-700's in my home and upgraded all of them to the MX-880. Programming them was actually fun using the control program. Very easy to configure and operate. I don't know if the MX-880 is as strongly built as the 700, but I guess time will tell. My 700's have fallen onto wooden floors everyday. Never an issue.

URC has been good.
