I have an MX-500 that will have to be pried from my cold, dead fingers. However, the fact that it can't interface to a PC means that using discrete codes is a royal pain. When I bought the MX-500 about four years ago, I took the plunge and went the whole JP1 route with a JP1 remote and cable. It worked and life was good.

Well, now I need to learn some new discretes and I have forgotten all JP1 secrets! And I don't want to go back to JP1 boot camp! It's so much to learn to accomplish such a small task.

So, what I'd like to know is: can't we just use a USB IR emitter and some software to teach our learning remotes the few discrete commands that don't exist in the OE remotes for our devices? If yes, what are people using out there to follow this approach?

I've found some possibly suitable hardware on these sites:

And a list of software:

Any flaw in my thinking here? If yes please help get me on track.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but does anyone have an answer to this question? I essentially want the same thing, to be able to teach cheaper Sony remotes (for friends and family members who don't want to spend much money), by using a USB transmitter to send things like discrete codes gleaned from stuff like ccf files. The hardware is not hard to find (the two linked above seem to be the most popular), but it seems the software is the difficult part. There's all sorts of stuff that goes the opposite way (take IR codes in and do stuff on your computer with them), but not much I can see that sends them back out again.

Through searching I've found other threads, but no conclusions to them. Everyone seems to agree that the Tira and the USBIRT are the best, but I haven't seen any good software recommendations. To make matters worse, it seems like more than half the software links on the Tira website are dead!

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help.

I have this same exact issue, looking for a relatively simple way to get discrete codes into my IR teachable remote.

Same here. I would love to be able to turn my receiver and tv on from my PC USB IR Receiver/Transmitter.

You 3 should get together and write the program yourself. But don't plan on making alot of money selling it, since this past year there only seems to be 4 people wanting this.

I am not sure that there aren't more people looking for this device. I recently bought an IR-PRO infrared device when I was doing a big job where I needed to program lots of RTI remotes.

RTI's software has a user library where you can store your commonly used infra-red codes. It also has a test button that should allow you to test the captured IR command. However, the IR-PRO unit that I purchased for a whopping $300 lacks a transmitting emitter. I guess that RTI is so afraid that someone would use their handy device to program a competitors remote that they left the transmitter out.

Now I need a IR transmitter that will also work with my RTI Integration Designer Software. Does anyone know of a device that will work here?

If I know that I have a particular discrete command in my user library already, it would be helpful to be able to download that command to any learning remote. (NOT JUST RTI REMOTES!!!)
