I've been controlling older LG TVs for quite some time via the RS232 protocol. Having said that I am looking to purchase a Smart TV model and wanted to find out if it would be possible to send commands to have the browser open?

I've looked through the newer manual(s) and haven't seen any mention of this but wasn't sure if there was documentation somewhere else that I haven't yet seen.

It would be nice if I could also tell the browser what page to load, but that's not nearly as important as simply opening the browser itself; I can have the page I want set as the default home page that that would open...

Thanks in advance!

OK, no response yet, so let me ask another question...

Is there ANY way to have the TV open a browser via any control mechanism?

I have a home automation system that I have connected to other LG TVs in the past; previously I would have the TV change to an analog video (composite) input to view my CCTV camera feeds from my DVR. Easy enough for the ASCII protocol.

However, I have upgraded to a digital system that no longer uses a composite video output; I have cameras that output 1080p as well. Nonetheless, I can access the DVRs webpage from the browser, but I would like a way to automatically launch the browser under certain conditions (e.g. if someone rings the doorbell). Any ideas?

You need to use a TAA compliant USB to SERIAL adapter. (All three USB ports on most models are RS-232 capable.)

The caveat is that the unit will NOT respond to USB/SERIAL commands when the unit is off. So always best to deal with that issue accordingly. If you are using a two-way control system testing it for on status will work when the unit is off (it doesn't know it's off it only knows it's not on).

I have no issue controlling the TV; I can turn the TV ON or OFF as well as cycle through the various hardwired video inputs.

What I am trying to do is determine if there is a command available that will launch the TV's built in web browser...

Understand that my control is via RS232. I just checked the RS232 documentation and don't see any mention of a command for Tools.

EDIT: I wasn't able to get the text above to link properly, but this is the latest RS232 protocol document that I was able to find: [Link: lgrs232.com]
