Hello,
I had found this site several weeks ago and have been browsing the contents. I have decided to join and hopeful contribute along the way.

My situation: I am a newbie to display Serial Control / RS-232 Hexidecimal command control.

My requirements: I Only Need ON/OFF functionality/ Hex/ Code for the tv/display.

TV/Displays I am looking at: "Consumer Grade/Price Point" in the 40-50"" range : Obvious brands of top of my head: LG, Samsung, Sharp ETC. 1920x1080 60-120hz ( Not in need of anything far High High end, just a display with hex on/of serial port functionality).

What I Plan to Do: I want to be able to connect my Mini PC platform to the display and through our management software be able to control the display/ Tvs On/Off functionality to go along with our operational schedule. The software we us has the function implemented to send the "Hexidecimal code" to the display via usb serial to the tv.

I am in need of a "Consumer Grade" tv that has On/Off Hexadecimal functionality preferably a manufacture and model year of 2014 on (Say something I could purchased/ Stocked at a box retailer or currently online).

What brands/manufacture and or models have this functionality? How does One find the Hexadecimal Code for on/off? And which Brands Manufactures have the Best/Easiest connection?

I know Samsung, I believe uses the Ex-Link 3.5mm jack connection?? Are there other brands say Sharp, Westinghouse, LG etc that has proven Hex/ Serial Control for On/OFF?

Any Help and assistance for a complete NEWBIE would be greatly appreciate. My window on this project is coming to a near end and I need to find a solution within the next week or so.

again thanks and I hope to be able to contribute as I continue to learn this area of functionality.

Feel free to contribute to this post with thoughts/ examples or PM (Private msg) inbox me!

cheers

Samsung, Sharp, LG should all have serial ports with discrete (meaning separate codes for power on / power off) RS-232 codes. Some Sony TVs also have serial ports; usually control on the Sony sets needs to be enable from deep within the settings menu. Typically larger sets (32" and above) have serial ports. Should be mentioned in the set Specs.

My advice: get a good USB-Serial adapter (Keyspan USA-19HS), and terminal program that you know how to work with which can send serial commands in Hex, ASCII, or both, and settle in with the set you get. Test all the commands you need before you try implementing in your other software set; that way, you won't be troubleshooting two things (TV and software) at once.

(And, if you need to, use a paper-clip to connect Pin 2 and Pin 3 of your serial cable to make a loop-back cable, just to verify that you are actually sending commands from your adapter)

As for serial command sets, they should be in the back of the TV manual (Sharp and LG used to do this) or available online (LG and Sony). Try looking in the "Files > Command Library" section on this site. If you have to contact the manufacturer to get codes, IMHO, then you're dealing with a company that you shouldn't be wasting your time buying from.

I am seconding this. Sharp and LG should work almost out of the box, assuming they have an rs232 db9 port on back. Samsung's are a little tougher, as you need to go into hotel model and properly pin out there silly ex-link connector.

hey guys thanks for the reply, The PC I will be connecting to these displays are are the new Chromebox is interface.
The software that I am using has built in the ability(terminal program) to send the Hex Code to the display in correspondence to the start/stop schedule. As far as I have read into it on that side of the ball game they stated all I need is a Tv/Display that can be controlled through Serial Hex Code, Again My only needs are "on/off".

I'd be connecting from USB from the PC to whatever the serial port is on the display. I am not trying to take the "easy way out" but not being overly technical w/ programming/code etc, I would hate to spend a chunk of change on a TV and come to find out I am unable to control "on/off" via hex/serial.

All things considered, with ease of finding the Hex code for ON/Off, what do you think is the go to trusted manufacture for a display I can find at say a "box retailer" Best Buy etc.

Again I appreciate the help, I want to be cautious before i spend within this budget....
Cheers

I installed several LG sets the other day using serial control. They were 32LY340C TVs if IIRC the model number. I like the panels quite a bit. If you choose this route (codes are generally in the back of the manual but here are a few):

OFF string is: ka 01 00\r
ON string is: ka 01 01\r

Since input changes can wreak havoc in many cases I recommend you also send the input command you need.

Component1 string is: kb 01 04\r
HDMI1 string is: kb 01 90\r
HDMI2 string is: kb 01 91\r
No, it doesn't come preprogrammed.

Thank You for the Information!

Question I just looked at an LG Product Model 47LB5900

In description it stats RS-232 (USB) The Stats (NO PWR ON)

Now is there a way to by pass this or change the settings to allow for Power on functionality? The price is right for the size and quality of the display....?

Window on Install Is closing fast. Any Help Would be greatly appreciated.

I don't believe any of the LG sets that accept an RS-232-USB connector will allow for Power On through that port. Check out the 47LB5800, or look for units that say "RS-232 (mini jack)" in the specifications. Those sets will use a 1/8"/3.5mm TRS connector for RS-232.
