I am new to RS232, I am working on a system that has a RTI control system (XP-8, T3-V, RK3, RK2, K4)

The theater has a Yamaha RX-V2700 AVR that I am controlling via RS232 from the XP-8 RJ45 port 1.

I have 2 H20 and 3 H21 DirecTV boxes that are controlled via IR, I want to use RS232. What else is required to accomplish this? Serial to USB adapter?

You will need the GUC232A IOGEAR USB to serial adapter. When you plug the adapter into the Direct TV box you will more than likely need to press the red reboot button to get the adapter active. Do this as a matter of practice - I was trying to communicate with my first one for 1/2 an hour because it was advertised as hot swap - it needed the reboot to recognize the adapter. After that, it was perfect - the adapter was about $25.00 online.

So you're telling me that the USB on the DirecTV boxes listed as "future use and accessories" is now able to control the box via RS232?!?

That is sweet - and actually useful - thought DirecTV was making an HD DVR with an actual serial connector now but I haven't done any DirecTV in awhile (CEDIA thing I saw).

I would also look into the DirecTV RS232 codes, baud rate, etc. as I really can't remember seeing them listed in any user's guide.

There was an actual pro model that was rack mountable and has a native 232 connection point. If I'm not mistaken, it is the only Direct TV box available for purchase, and not leased. And I am using the adapter on an HR-22-100, but it's also supposed to work on the 21 as well.

I have used several of the "Pro" units via rs-232. I was useing an AMX system which had no bearing on the programming other than I could query the current channel for feedback on my TP. There is direct channel entry as well. Rather than issueing....2,2,5,enter, there is a code for every channel for direct entry. Handy enough.
Don't read my answer. Someone else will go into great detail as to why I am wrong rather than answer the original question...

I have a Keyspan USA-19HS Serial to USB adapter. Will it work?

Or does it have to be the GUC232A IOGEAR USB to serial adapter?

According to the DTV RS232 protocol guide it has to be the

IOGEAR GUC232A
ATEN UC-232A
BAFO BF-810

You will need a null modem

You will also need to rewrite the RS232 in the library.

Copy, press "HEX" and paste for all yor commands.

Im running rs-232 on a H21, HR22 and one of the older DVR models, cant remember the number(the silver one). The Non-DVR boxes respond extremely fast. Near flawless operation. The DVR boxes are a bit sluggish, especially when scrolling through the program guide.

the best part about the 232 on these is discrete channel macros are 1 command and the box tunes almost instantly, it's my favorite at least...
Hey, thats a nice plasma, you can put that in the back of my truck...

Hi Cristin, good luck with that. Crestron has training programs they offer, you should look into that b/c good Crestron programmers charge a lot more than 50 bucks an hour.

Ohh, yeah, what made you think posting this on a thread about DirecTV would help?

My HTPC does not have a serial port. I use a USB->Serial to control my Onkyo 875. Can I use a combination of USB->Serial and a Serial->USB to link the DTV receiver to my HTPC via USB?
