Hello,

I have an install in HI coming up that I need to be 100% prepared for, unfortunately I am having one issue, the LG TV's that we are going to control have 3.5 connector on them and the freaking manual does not specify the correct pin out.

Do any of you gurus know how this pinout should be?

I need to order 61 cables, and don't want to get the wrong ones. I know I can order null-modem adapters but we are on such a tight budget since this was an overlook.

If you want a specific answer the model #s of the TVs would be helpful.

I looked over the manual again, and in there it says to use cross-over 232, but I'm superstitious and want to know if any have experience with this model or similar models that use the 3.5 jack... to back it up...LG support by the way is useless. they told me that the TV has a DB9 instead of the 3.5 but I'm looking at the TV pics from the school we are going to work at and sure enough they are wrong. then the next support "tech" I talked to told me only the USB - DB9 cable would work. I call BS on that as well.... I might go down to wally world and buy one just to be sure, but hope someone here has the info before that.

Thanks guys, Ive always been a fan of the site and many buds are here as well.

Ah, missed the model # as it wasn’t in the post.

Assuming you don’t have a TV on hand to verify first-hand, I’d get 61 of these along with the 3.5mm-DB9 cables (actually, I’d probably get 70 of each in case of a bad one or two):

Under $100 shipped for piece of mind.

Nice link, good call.

Thanks, but still keep this open if someone knows the for sure answer on this one...otherwise, keep posted, I will go buy one from walmart soon and post...my other concern is that the 3.5mm port on this one is labeled " Service Only"

What kind of control system are you using?

It is common for the LG Tv's to list their 232 ports as "service only." However, they are generally DB9. Are you certain that that port is a 3.5 rs232.

This is going to sound, well, terrible, but that's a $500 LG with what appears to be an all plastic case and chassis. I can't imagine that is a functional 232 port. Why aren't you going IR?

went to walmart to find the same model, and so findings are this,

the service port is indeed 232 control port, the pinout is

• DB9 Pin 3 to 3.5mm Tip
• DB9 Pin 2 to 3.5mm Ring
• DB9 Pin 5 to 3.5mm Sleeve

Cables to go sells these cables for my cost $2.15 each. part number 02445

Thanks, hopes this helps someone else at least, now going to return the tv.

BTW we are installing the first phase of hundreds of these owner furnished LG models, using contemporary research ICC1-232 RS-232 TV Controller to automate campus wide emergency broadcasts and daily modulated broadcasts.

being on an island is the biggest issue, radio shack rarely even stocks any 232 hoods or db9 adapters of any sort...or any electronic store (there is one walmart, costco, and small guitar shops there)

so now I can sleep better untill I fly to over in a couple.

Thanks,
Shane

We are using the same exact model TV at a student lounge and also wish to control via RS232.

Were you able to successfully connect through the Service port using the pinouts described above and control the TV? We mostly are looking for discrete ON and OFF and HDMI-1 in our programming and would appreciate if you happen to know the serial strings for these?

Any help would be greatly appreciated to save us the learning curve!

Thx, mike

Most of the LG models over the last several years will respond to these commands: (though these TVs had true db9 connections for rs232).
