I have a Samsung UN60EH6000 LED TV that I have connected to my PC via the EX-Link port with a 3.5mm to USB serial cable (found here).

The TV will not respond to any commands I send it.  I can successfully open a port and send commands, but I can never see a response.  I am using RealTerm to send commands.  I've also used Hercules and PowerShell to open a port and send commands.  I've tested with various commands, but I'll use the power off as an example.

In RealTerm, I am sending this:  0x08,0x022,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x01,0xD5 as Hex.  When I look at the Log file, I see that the WriteCom is sending [08]""[00][00][00][01][D5].  I'm not sure if this is due to RealTerm, because sending data through a byte array in PowerShell did not work either.

I am using BAUD 9600, Parity None, 1 stop bit, and Data bit 8.  I'm not sure if I have to set up the Samsung to receive commands.  Some sources said there was a RS232 option in the service menu, but I didn't find any such option.  Maybe the name changed?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried to switch the tip and ring? I believe the pinout for the ex-link port is: tip=Rx, ring=Tx, sleeve=ground. The cable you are using has the tip=Tx and the ring=Rx. Don't know if that helps.

Hi HCSIL,

Thanks for the info. I am pretty much completely new to all of this, so I don't know how I would go about switching the tip and ring. Could you instruct me how this can be done?

If you don't mind cutting the cable, cut it in the middle and use a multimeter to check which wire is for the Tx and which is for the Rx on the TRS side. Then swap them going to the usb side.

Ok, I made the changes to the wire and now I get back a response from the TV! However, I'm not sure how to interpret this response. The TV is on, and I send this command to turn off the TV:

{08}{22}{00}{00}{00}{01}{D5}

I then get a response:

{7E}{5E}{40}{BF}{5E}{40}{BF}{5E}{40}{BF}{5E}{00}{BF}{5E}{40}{BF}{5E}{40}{BF}{5E}{00}

The TV itself does not turn off nor change state at all. The information I found on the web says that I should expect a 3 byte packet returned with {03}{0C}{F1} meaning success and {03}{0C}{FF} meaning failure.

Any ideas?
