I want to make a little black box that wnen it receives a rs232 string it will change it or add a digit. and send the signal on it's way. Besides using a laptop is there a more permident run all the time solution.

I suggest you to use a STAMP II by Parallax ! Easy to program and easy to integrate in a black box.
