How do I write a serial string for the following:

syntax: Zxy
parameter: x=Zone: valid range 1-8
y=state: D=off
1= on

Knowing as little as I do about writing strings, I thought it was as simple as inputing Z11 to turn on zone 1???

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards

It would help to know a few things.

What is this product?

What are you using to send the command?

It is a Matrix Audio MRC 8e (8 zone distributed audio system). Here's a link to the manual. page 42 details the rs 232 codes/protocal. I am controlling this device with a Vantage system. There is an option in their programming software that allows me to send a "serial string" via rs 232 directly to the Matrix Audio device.

Thanks for any help you can provide

Zone 1 on should be
Z11

Zone 4 Volume Up should be
V4++

according to the documents a or is not required.

I would try sending the commands from HyperTerminal or something similar.

Once you have that working then move to the Vantage.

Remember that a different cable (null or straight) is required from vantage depending on where the command is coming from, controller or rs232 station bus.

Thanks for the reply D. Are you telling me that if I connect to the Matrix Audio device via Hyperterminal and send Z11, this will control the device? Seems from other posters and internet searches, there are more commands required in a serial string.

Also, the link I sent for the device manual specified a null modem cable. I havn't seen anywhere in the vantage documentation specifying which cable type.

Thanks D. Sorry to be such a rookie.

That is correct.

Z11 from HT should work.

There are some drivers in Vantage (not finished), have you tried them?

Vantage needs two different cables depending on what sends the command.

The controller should use a NULL (I think) and a BUS RS232 port will require a STRAIGHT as the NULL is built in.

I have tried the vantage drivers, they are incomplete (I recall only the "all zones on/off" were complete), they did work, so at least I was able to verify the vantage controller is communicating with the device.

As far as creating a driver through driver wizard, it didn't seem like setting parameters for a multi zone system was an option.

I'll give the HT route a try.

Thanks again D.

Hey D. Tried using hyperterminal to control this device. still no go. I did control another switcher with my HT connection and worked, so I know my connection is good. Any other thoughts?

cable
settings

Tripple check your connection settings.
Try switching between a null and straight.

If HT wored with another device then there are no software conflicts.
