Hi

My Marantz SR5600 won't respond on the rs232 port.
I've got it connected to my PC via a straight serialcable.
As i can understand from the documentation from us.marantz.com, the reciever should send out an auto status feedback, when you change a setting i.e. volume. But nothing is happening

I've also tried to send commands to the unit, but can't quite figure out the context. Is this right for turning the power off: @"PWR:1"0Dh

Finaly i tried to measure the output on pin 2 with a oscilloscope. But nothing is happening on the bus, when i change some settings.

Hope you guys can help me.
Regards

Dennis

what are you using to control it?

The syntax may be slightly different depending on what you use.

Try something simple like hyper terminal first.

Remove the quotes. The command should simply be @PWR:1 followed by a carriage return. As sydinstaller says, try using Hyperterminal or Putty first. Also, make sure you are using a correct cable. If you aren't seeing any activity then you may need to flip your send/receive pins.

Hi

Thanks for the sugestions.

I tried to use Hyper Terminal, but can't figure out how to send a command from it.
Instead i'm using Advanced Serial Terminal.

I tried to switch the Rx/Tx cables, but still nothing is happening.
Still i can't understand why i'm not getting any respond from the reciever, when i'm changing a setting, like mute.

some marantz receivers require you to turn off the economy mode in the setup to enable rs232 control.

If you aren't seeing anything it still sounds like a communication issue. You mentioned that you "tried to switch the Rx/Tx cables" - what exactly do you mean by this? Did you try a null modem cable instead of straight through? Also, what are your serial port settings? They should be 9600-8-N-1, no flow control. Finally, are you sure you're using the right COM port on your PC? If it's on the motherboard it is likely COM1 or COM2 but if it's an add-on card or a USB-serial adapter then it's probably something else.

Try jumping from pin 2-3 on your rs232 cable to ensure that the cable is actually working properly. In hyperterminal with pins 2 and 3 connected to each other you should be able to type a letter and your letter will double as it is sending and receiving. If this isn't happening then there is something wrong with your cable or your computer settings. I am not familiar with Advanced Serial Terminal but would think it is close to hyperterminal in respect to sending and receiving commands.
You can't fix stupid
