hi, I wish to control my amp via its 1 rs-232 port from both my remote and my pc.

I have seen plenty of

1 rs-232 male to 2 rs-232 switches

but nothing the other way around.

What do people do in this situation?

thanks

CaM

Kramer VP14

hi, both of those products seem to be the other way around

i.e. 1 input to 3 output.

what I need is

3 input to 1 output.

thanks

You just hook them up the other way around and it does the same thing.

cma, are you sure about that? Electrically, combining is a whole different problem than distributing. The problem with combining arises if the two sources send at the same time. Additional logic is needed to avoid a collision to the sinking device. Can be simply handled if collisions can be disregarded but not if they have to be handled or proper feedback ( a return message) is expected.

I have 2 xantech xovp-14 (Kramer) cascaded and have a mixture of input/outputs and has been working great. I'm sure there exists potential data collisions but I haven't seen any. I'm using an iPad with global cache, URC mrx-1, and PC for inputs on one, out to DirecTV, Yamaha Amp, Xantech MRC-88 (trigger for other equipment) on the other.

Barry, you are correct. Collisions can happen with this system but for most instances it is not an issue. Just don’t try to control the device from more than one controller at the same time.

I use one to control an iPort IW22 from both a Nevo S70 and Vantage. As yet I have had no issues as I understand that only one controller can be used at a time.

You could use a Xantech device that can switch the port being used, but you need to send a switch command before every send command to make sure you are on an active port.

Do you have any relays avilable to you ?

if so you can use these to switch the TX line from one device to the other, but make sure there is a small delay around 50ms before transmitting , if you require full 2 way feedback to both devices then you may have to look at some industrial products but these will cost many $'s

Funny thing happened with a bunch of Panasonic commercial panels on a Kramer VP14. When you send a serial command to a Pana panel, it echoes exactly the same string back...so when three are on a serial hub that sends out on all ports whatever it gets on any one port, the panels start yelling at each other and never stop. In this case we only needed one-way control so we wrenched off the feedback pins.

The VP14 will work great for your application. I have one connected to two serial ports of a HAI Lumina Pro, then to the serial connection of a Xantech MRC88m(only one left). Port 2 on the Lumina is configured with HAI's Xantech "Driver". The problem was, the port wouldn't allow other serial string to pass thru, just the basic Xantech commands. I set port 3 on the Lumina to "Pro-link", so I can send strings for Tuner Presets, etc. from Omni 10p Touchscreens.

I have successfully used an RS232 Combiner from B&B Electronics for this purpose (control 1 device from 2 sources). The feedback from the device is always sent to the 2 sources, which is fine also.
