im using the same usb adapter that was worked in the past and cant seem to get control of the new box, are the codes and everything the same as the hr21? i see some people have got it to work just curious what commands they were using and baud rate

Here is what I have done in the past. I have not tried one of the newer boxes but have had great success with previous generation units. I used the IOGEAR USB-232 adapter. It also required a null modem adapter. The settings are 9600, 8, None, and 1. The power on command is FA A5 00 01 C5. Make sure you you plug the adapter in and then press the red reset button on the front to cycle the unit and it then should recognize it. Also make sure you have the correct port set in whatever program you are using and that you have it in the right ASCII versus HEX mode if that is required.

turned out that it was my belkin adapter that ive used in the past, i ordered the iogear and as soon as i plugged it in it worked. thanks for the help though, the codes are the same just so people know

if you want to save a few bucks on adapters, i've used dozens of the following adapters with no issues.  The directv document only lists a few models, but so far and adapter I have plugged into them has worked.

For future reference, I read in another post it is advisable to completely pull the power cord to the box and plug it back in after you plug in the adapter. Pressing the red button is not enough.
