trying to control two denon power amps via rs232 with no luck, rest of the gear in the house is fine

power off shoud be

PW00STANDBY\r

and on should be

PW00ON\r

after the PW it is "zero" "zero"

any ideas? i know the baud settings are right according to the docs, double checked the cm232 cables, and checked the pin out, but still no luck

I have never used that unit but here are a few suggestions. I know you said you checked it, but make sure your properties are set for 9600, 8, N, 1 and you have the correct port selected. This unit appears to be a straight connection so it should just plug right in. You haven't mentioned what processor you are using, but I assume it is a RP-6 since you are using a CM-232. If that is the case, make sure you plug the CM-232 directly to the proper port and do not use the included adapter. Also, have you tried different ports and or another CM-232, just to verify neither of them are bad. I have had a bad CM-232 once or twice. Does the RM-433 light up when you press the button to indicate it is receiving a command? Is there any setting in the amp that turns off the RS-232 for a power saving feature? I would also cycle the power of the amp with the CM-232 connected manually just to see if that makes it recognize it. Next I would hook up a laptop to the amp and see if you can control it that way. And finally I would call Chuck Miller at Denon to see if he has any ideas.
