Hi,

Is there any class, school or books on beginner's programming for RS232. I have been doing ir for many years and want to learn how to do RS232. Is there a IT class that teaches it or is it under a different name. is there any key words on google to find help. I tried but could not find any.

Thanks for any help or info regarding this.

Get yourself an Hex to decimal converter, read a paperback or two

- RS-232: Telecommunication, Data terminal Equipment, Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment, Serial Port, ITU-T, Electronic Industries Alliance, Asynchronous Serial Communication

and download a few protocol manuals and play around. Use a computer with a serial port and hyperterminal to experiment.

Remember, Serial is not a standard language - there are many manufacters that explain their protocol in a way that will leave you more confused than before. Start with the easy ones and see if you can start recognizing the 4 or 5 different main ways RS-232 translation is converted.

I don't think your an installer, but URC offers a decent web trainng class on RS-232 in the control room.

Good luck, and ask questions!

Henry,

You want to write a program to read/write data from an RS232 port? If that's the case, then I might be able to help.

I've written dozens of programs over the years, in C, C++ and Java, on Windows, UN*X and Cygwin, to interface with scads of RS232 devices. But how you access the port depends on the operating system, the device and so on.

I'll PM you an email if this is what you're after.
I can even send you sample code...

I would be interested in this info. I have been a custom installer for years, and am starting to dive into the "behind the scenes" stuff so to speak. Any info you have for starting to write these programs would be appreciated. I am predominately a home automation programmer in either Crestron or Control4, but would love to be able to write more focused drivers.

Please shoot me an email at your earliest convenience

[email protected]

thanks,

Dave

On my web site (www.the-gordons.net) there is a document that you should be able to easily locate (Bottom of first page follow link to documents, downloads, etc...) and find a document (MS Word) entitled Pronto PRO Communications. While it was written for the Pronto PRO line of remotes it does cover the basics of RS232 communications, jargon, cabling, etc.

Might help
