Can anyone help me understand what I might be missing to get an Arcam DV79 DVD player operating on RS232?

I am using a RTI RP6 with a CM232 w/ Female Gender Bender. Straight Through.

These are the codes I got from the Arcam Manual

ASCII

Power On = !*1~\r

Play = !@0~\r

Thanks for the help.
