I am using a Universal Remote MSC-400 to send serial commands to a Denon 4806CI.

When I embed the Serial command as part of a Macro group, the Denon doesnt respond the first time I send the command but responds the second time.
I dont understand why I have to send the command (eg: to wake up from standby or to go to standby) twice.. Sending a single command to the Denon appears to work ok, just not so when I execute a group of commands (not all of which are directed to the Denon)

Other components that I am controlling do not exhibit this issue even using Macro groups.

your feedback appreciated. I also posted this query inthe Universal Remote area of the Forums.

What kind of delay are you using in between commands?? The Denon seems most stable at around 2 seconds for me...

It is not so much that the Denon doesnt respond between commands. It is just that the first time I send a command to turn on, the Denon ignores it unless I try it again.. as if it requires me to send the same command twice. I modified the Macro to send the same command twice and it seems to work(90% of the time) but I am not too happy with that workaround. I have started having a similar issue with a Denon 1940CI DVD player (less often than the 4806CI receiver). My observation has been that commands via IR flashers are far more reliable than those sent via RS232 and this somehow seems bizarre..I thought it was the other way around.

Another issue is with the Volume up and Volume down.. It seems to go up in really small increments and in order to reduce the volume from say -20 to -30, I need to press the volume down button 20times.. I am still looking for this fix.

thanks for your reply

Hard to say if you do have some communication. I have set up so many Denon's and controlled via serial and it works rock solid. I do not use URC for control though. The only thing I need to adjust is the delay between characters on the volume + and -...

I would double check your connections or even use a different port with different cables and experiment.

Hi,

Not sure about Denon but Integra have a new RS232 volume command that jump 1db as opposed to the standard 0.5db.

Also setting the delay between rpts will help. I use 100ms with Integra and Nevo.

Denon may have a similar command.

Maybe this is the same issue we are having with serial from MSC and Denon DVD's in general.
I had it with old DVD's (1940CI) and with Blu-Ray's (2500BTCI) and now I hear there are issues with new 2010CI's. After this ordeal I have switched for a while to other brands until this is rectified.
The issue is that they just don't seem to work with MSC the same way. Every unit or unit - MSC combo needs to be set to something else. Try experimenting with parity (none or even) and CR enabled or not. You have to find right combination. I know how it sounds. Ridiculous. But the truth is I have installed many, many serial controlled units and all seem to have one common characteristic: They work exactly the same way. Once protocol, port settings and cable is figured out, it always work the same way. Not with Denon DVD's.
AVR's on the other hand are rock solid - never even single issue. Weird.
Remember that if you record macro directly from "connected devices" all RS232 commands come in checked to repeat. I'm trying to make URC fix it but since it is not a critical issue (you uncheck it manually and it is fixed) it probably will be fixed - to use RTI's mantra - in two weeks.
Piece.
