I'm currently using an IR-543 to control my X10 Appliance module. This module is controlling a bias light.

I would like to disable programming on my ApplianceLinc Applicance module. According to the manual, I should send:
M16 O16 P16 N16 M16

My IR-543 only has buttons for channels 1-8, and no lettered buttons. Can anyone explain what I'm missing here? How do I send the above?

I have an MX-850 and the supplied software has X-10 codes. Some codes are all numbers, others are all letters. Could someone shed some light on this?

To clarify, the reason I want to disable programming on the module in the first place - Every week or so my applicance Module stops successfully switching on/off the light. The light on the module flashes as though it's getting a signal, but no actual switching occurs. Any idea why this would be?

Once it stops responding how do you get it to work again? You could have some interference on the powerline, this is a common problem with X-10.

As far as letters vs numbers: letters are the house code, the IR-543 can only send 1 house code at a time which is selected by the little click wheel on the unit, the unit code is the number, the IR-543 can send all 16 when being controlled from a remote.

As long as your MX-850 can control you IR-543, your using the correct code set.

For programming you would be better to get a [Link: homeautomationnet.com]

housecor,

RWI's suggestion (PHC02) is an improvement over the IR543 for sending commands: at least it offers all 16 unit codes (numbers). But you will still have to play with the house code wheel to set the house code. Make sure the device you acquire allows you to send ONLY the house code + unit code (ex: M16) and not force you to push a function button as well (ex: M16 ON).

This is OK for a "one time" intervention. Your next step up is a more intelligent device. I believe the cheapest, if you already own a PC, is a powerline interface such as the 1132U or 1132CU. You can then not only send specific commands such as "disable module" but also (depending on what software you get) program conditional triggers...but that's another discussion.

The IR543 also controls all 16 unit codes.

There have been a number of posts regarding this -- [Link: remotecentral.com]
Is a good one.

You can only physically turn on/off/dim units 1-8 with the IR543, but with your remote you can turn the other ones on/off/dim.

If you are using a UEI (One-for-All) remote to control the IR543, there are instructions in the link above to access units 10-16

edit: to answer your post -- to send the code you want you would need to set the first house code, M, send the code for 16 (on?) with the remote, change the wheel to O, send the code for 16, change the wheel to P, send the code for 16, etc. I don't know how much time you have to do this before the codes reset -- it might allow seconds which would be workable, or it might only allow milliseconds between the codes -- which would be difficult to do.
