I found this SmarLinc Home Theater Kit at the www.smathome.com website. Does anyone know if you can do everything with its touchscreen that you can do with the Pronto? If not what are its limits compared to pronto capabilities? Also how mnuch memory does it have and whats it's learning and sending frequency range? I would like to know all I can about this kits capabilities. Thanks in advance.

To answer your question, No. The controller you mention will not learn IR codes. It works only with the IR codes built into its firmware. This can be very limiting as you might have experienced with other universal remote controls.

I recommend the use of a JDS IRXpander and a Stargate or Stargate Lite for home automation. Please see my other post for information on Stargate, Stargate Lite, and the soon to be released LCD control panels. But you can use your Pronto as a great front end for this system also. Since the IRXpander is 2-way, you can point your Pronto at it and send it a series of IR codes from a Pronto macro (this is explained a little more in the following paragraph).

The IRXpander is an optional IR component for use with the JDS Stargate or Stargate Lite. It has the ability to learn up to 500 IR commands and has 4 "zoned" IR emitter outputs. It is also a two-way controller which means that it can both send and receive IR commands. For example, you could program the attached Stargate to respond to your TV IR codes 1,2,3 to trigger an Event (i.e. macro) to start your theater scene. It also supports sensors to track the ON/OFF state of your AV devices (useful if you don't have discrete ON/OFF IR codes). There are several sensor types available including a small wire type that is simply placed on the back of the TV. You can view or download an IRXpander specification sheet on our web site at: [Link: ourworld.compuserve.com]

This setup is much more flexible and robust than the SmartLinc Home Theater Kit and the cost is about the same if you opt for the Stargate Lite.

Thanks alot Robert. Its just that I'm quadraplegic(unable to move my arms) so I'm gradually making my living enviroment remote accessible as funds permit. My pronto is a tremendous help but I'm also looking ahead. Which means any change in touchscreen remote controls must be of equal or more advanced or improved capabilities. And Crestron an AMX is out of my league. :)
