Hello,

Anyone know anything about the iconRemote? X10 had a limited amount and the next day they were sold out.

Can anyone post some information on it? I see they have a website up at x10iconremote.com and that they are on back order, however, i'd like to learn more about it. I've heard a few reviews about it but need more info.

Can anyone assist?
Pogi

On the website there is a owners manual pdf link. [Link: x10.com]

You can set up favourite channels, multi key macros etc.

Anyone know if the ICON remote has state tracking ala Harmony remotes? Almost any universal remote does macros. I use Harmony remotes because they remember if my TV is ON or OFF, and what inputs every device involved is on.

Pretty sure no. Also it should be noted that this is otherwise known as the Philips SRU8010 (check my CES 2007 video).

Having nothing better to spend my money on, and being tired of 5 remotes, I ordered and received my Iconremote yesterday. At first I was excited about the setup, but found that is a bit cumbersome to go through the different codes to find which one matches your equipment. Starting with my TV, (Panasonic Viera Plasma) I noticed that there were several codes that controlled my TV, but some functions didn't work with all the codes. I did not find one that worked perfectly. I moved on to the DVD and found the correct code. Next was the cable box (to control my rotor) I also found the correct code. My Sony receiver was the same story as the TV. I settled on one code that controls most functions and then set out to "learn" the other functions. This is the trickiest part of the operation. The remotes have to be in just the right positions and angles for learning to work. Luckily there is an indicator to show you that the iconremote is recieving the codes from the secondary remote before you actually "learn" it. Take note, the sensor for learning is at the bottom not the top where you might think it is. The learned codes can include several key presses from different remotes if you want. The bright, color LCD screen can be programmed with logos for favorite channels. The logo database is quite extensive which does include Canadian channels such as Global, CH, City, CBC and TVO for OTA and many calbe/satellite specialty logos. I only had a short time to play yesterday, so tonight I'll get down to some serious macro programming. One other note: I did manage to "lock up" the iconremote into a loop, which meant removing a battery to reset it.

Well, I had more time last night to program the iconremote. Now it might be because I'm a newbie to a truely universal remote, but I think this thing is great. The features that didn't work on the TV and Audio modes can be programmed in learn mode. You just override the setting that was assigned by the default code to any key you want. As well, you can control other equipment when in a specific device. Eg. when I am watching a DVD, I programmed the Vol up, Vol dn, Mute for my reciever when in the DVD mode. This eliminates switching between devices to perform certain tasks. No lockups this time, I guess it must of been some combination of keycodes yesterday.

Generally speaking, you're better off learning codes rather than using the database codes on the remote.

Yes, you are absolutely correct, I have pretty much finished setting all the codes and macros i think i'll need. My 5 remotes are soon to be retired to the "junk" drawer.

Uhm, did you get any software or a USB cable with the ICON?

Usually connection to a computer is for:
1. Backing up your current configuration, so you don't have to redo it should the ICON lose it.
2. Software upgrades, usually downloaded from the manufacturer's web site.
3. Artwork. If a TV network changes their logo, you get new icons (downloaded from the internet) this way.

Of course none of the above may relate to your ICON remote. Perhaps there's simply the potential for it to be used as a temporary data storage device. If it's got a speaker (does it beep?) it might be usable to play MP3 files! Wouldn't that be great! ;-)

Please be careful when buying this remote from X10. I ordered one from them and they sent me a defective remote that don't work at all. It looked like the remote that they sent was an opened box one. X10 issued a RMA but expected me to pay for the shipping. This is a brand new unit that didn't work at all and I have to pay for the shipping so that I can get a replacement. I didn't agree with this so I called customer support and the lady who was very rude to me said that she will request for a shipping
label and send it to me but it never happened. I called again and was told the same thing. At this point, all I want to do was to return the remote. About the remote, it looked very cheap and nothing like the picture. It was packaged in a way that made me think that this is something that cost around 10-15 bucks not $129.99. It was a huge disappointment. For $17.49 more, I'm going back to buy the Logitech Harmony 880 for the peace of mind.

I emailed X10 and here's the reply:

At this time we do not have software for it. I do not know if we will release some in the future or not. I would reccomend signing up for the newsletter and keep an eye out for updates there.

Hamiltonjim - I just wanted to echo your sentiment. I am not a newbie and I was truly impressed by the iconRemote. Before I opened the box I was fully expecting to not like it but it was very easy to set-up and use. I even created Macros labelled "Watch TV" and "Watch DVD" to mimic the Harmony functionality. Unfortunately these are toggle only macros but for a play room remote at just over $100 it does the job!
