Howdy,

I have a couple of Air Conditioners that I want to automate, and I am a little confused about the safty level of doing so.

One of the 2 AC units needs the heavy duty appliance module because it's plug has a different configuration than a normal 3 prong plug. That one I am assuming will be fine.

My worry is about my small air conditioner that uses a normal 3 prong plug. I plugged it into an X-10 appliance module I picked up at radio shack, and everything seemed to work perfectly. That night I got a little cold so I turned it off and I noticed a flash. It looks like there is a large spark/arcing thing that happens inside the X-10 module when I try to turn it off. It was very duplicatable and I am worried that it may start a fire or something so I have stopped using it.

Does anyone have any ideas? I am hoping that it is just a cheap X-10 module and that I just need to pick up a different model or something.

Thanks!!

Will

Your first AC unit sounds like it is 220v based on your description of the plug configuration. We have them in 15 and 20 amp versions.

Your other AC unit must be 110v if you can plug it into a standard X-10 appliance module. This module is rated at 15 amps. Check your AC power draw to see if it is more than 15 amps. If it is, you should not use this module. There are other alternatives for higher amperage but they require direct wiring rather than plug in.

If you AC unit is not drawing more than 15 amps, it sounds like your appliance module might be shot. You might consider an appliance module with AGC as they seem to be built a little better than the less expensive variety.
