Very interesting site. Came here to learn about remotes and the next thing I know I'm wanting to control my lights with them.

I've been trying to read previous posts but wanted to get clarification on the simple task I would like to do. I simply want to use either a MX-500 or AV300 to dim a set of three lights controlled currently by a regular dimmer switch.

From my reading I seem to need a Infrared Mini-Controller (IR543) which plugs into a wall outlet. In addition to that, is all I need an X-10 type dimmer wall switch? It can't be that simple can it? Surely I'm missing something.
- Do different brand switches have different dimming ratio's or levels?
- What is recommended by users of this site?
- I'm assuming the Universal Remote must be able to point directly to the IR543 (ie., the IR543 can't be hidden behind the coach)?

We just closed on our new house February 20th and I replaced a good majority of light switches soon after. Therefore, I really need to see if this intriguing hobby is something I can actually afford to do and understand so that I can return the regular dimming switches I bought before the 30 return policy is up.

I'll continue to search post to nail down the necessities but any assitance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You are correct, you will need the ir-543 and just one switch to start, I am the type to go for quality, the features, looks, and reliablity of good switch's are worth the extra money to me. PCS and Smarthome are both excellant brands of switch's. I do my shopping here http://www.homeautomationnet.com Bill the owner is wonderful to deal with and has good prices as well. You have to decide for yourself where to draw the price/quality line.

Bill also has a nice PCS starter kit at a good deal.
