For example: Lets say I turn on a lamp by using my x-10 rf remote by pressing device 10 and then on. Minutes or hours later I am ready to turn the same light off, Can I just press off without first pressing device 10? I'm curious as to how long it will respond without sending a new device command.
also does this same principle apply to my ir543 or maxi controller or is it different from the x-10 tranciever?

The last command should remain active, but due to the nature of the medium, it's a good idea to resend the entire command sequence.
The IR543 is hardwired to a house code via a small switch on the front (top) of the device, you only send unit codes and commands to it, the same rule should apply.

When you say the last command, does that refer to the last command in the transciever or the last one in the remote?
In other words, If I use the x-10 rf remote and send a device 10 at 8:00 am and then use the pronto and send a device 5 command, when I go back to the x-10 remote will it still remember the 10 code or did the pronto wipe it out. I know this is kind of confusing but...
I'm trying to figure out if my wife needs to know a lot or if she can just use the x-10 remote that we use only in the bedroom just by pressing on/off or dim/bright...
