I plan to have a setup that will turn on the hallway lights automatically at a specific time using the mini timer before I come home. I wonder this will cause the alarm system to go off.

Gee thats a good question!
DETAILS! DETAILS! DETAILS!
This is not the Psychic hotline, tell us about your 'setup' and your alarm system, what triggers the alarm, sound, motion, LIGHT?

Oh sorry. Basically my alarm system has a motion sensor facing the hallway. When I'm not home, the motion sensor is activated to detect intruder. I'm afraid that the lights will trigger the alarm's motion sensor when they are turned on by the mini timer. The X10 setup is for a 3-way circuit: SwitchLinc 2384 (Master) and 2382 (companion) which control 2 hallway lights, and an X10 mini timer (MT10A). Hope I give you enough details...

Most if not all motion detectors are IR based. Therefore, to detect motion it has to be motion from a warm and moving onbject. Also, motion detector have a minimum as well as a maximum operating temperature. If it gets too cold they simply do not detect motion as most of the heat is quickly absorbed by the cold air, if it gets too warm the motion detector can not detect heat a moving body as everything is at the same potential. Pet immune detectors (PIR) are made so that they only detect a moving IR/heat generating source of greater than 40-70Lbs to activate the motion detector at a given distance (usually 8-45 ft. range).

A normal household light, turning on, does not generate enough of a moving heat wave to set off a properly working motion detector.
Logic is a systematic method of coming to the wrong conclusion with confidence.

FRR, I don't mean to pick, but PIR stands for "Passive Infra-Red".

Can't you simply test this scenario by turning on the light and seeing if it tripps the alarm?

X-10 alarm consoles can be triggered by a consecutive on-off-on-off X-10 signal on the code set on the console. Just don't let the kids play with the lights.

Dewayne/Larry,
I had posted this message before I had the alarm system installed. So I finally got everything set up and the alarm does not go off as a result of lights turned on.

". I'm afraid that the lights will trigger the alarm's motion sensor when they are turned on by the mini timer"

Do you feel a breeze when you turn a lamp on?
