I'm new to the x-10 stuff but want to control lighting with my new Pronto. I have a gang of wall switches with traditional (ie non-rocker) on/off switches. I don't/can't change the face plate (its big and special order) Questions:

1. Any x-10 dimmer wall switches that will accomodate my traditional wall switches? Where do I get them?

2. Any advice for a new installation? Places to buy, prices, controllers etc.

Thanks in advance

You can use Wall Switch Modules - X-10 part number WS467, Radio Shack Cat.#: 980-0194
. They are designed for traditional wall switch replacement.

You can get them from X-10.com, Radio Shack or at your local Lowe's Home improvement center. Thay are priced from $12- 19.99. Depending on where you get them.

Here's a link to some information and a picture:

Hope this is helpful!

Scott:

Thanks. I've been reading the x-10 forum and some members have mentioned dimmers that dim up and down, "Softfade" and other features like intellisense and preset dim (switch by Leviton (6381). Is this type of switch over Kill? If not, any place I can get these to fit my toggle outlets? Any thoughts appreciated.

Joe,

Sorry, I don't know of any that support the features of the Leviton 6381, that are the "standard" type switches.

What is it about your switch plate that will not allow you to upgrade?

Leviton makes a build it yourself type switchplate system that uses individual panels that interconnect. This will allow for just about any configuration.

Maybe I can find the "right" switch plate for you.

Ready to help,

Scott

Can't I get the dim up/down effect with the cheaper toggle switch and some timming delay with the Pronto? I did read you recent replys to a newbie and I got the impression you could do this. Great stuff, your advice is good.

Thanks again.

Joe,
One feature that has become very popular is the "Soft Fade". This allows the lights to dim up from an off position. The cheaper switches must turn on full bright before you can dim or brighten them. Kinda sucks but for half the price...

You can purchase wall plates for just about any configuration. I would not let this be the factor for the switches you choose!

Intellisense or AGC (Automatic Gain Control)is a feature I would look for in a switch. This will improve the performance of the switch.

Joe,

I agree with Chris. Don't let the wall plate thing get in your way! I don't mind the bright then dim feature because of the price difference- half! It's really a personal preference thing. I also agree that you will like having AGC.

Be sure and let us know if you need any help whatsoever. Always glad to be of service!

Sincerely,

Scott

Chris and Scott:

Really appreciate the advice. I found the Leviton Dimmer 6381 at worthdist.com for $24.89. Will order them and the IR543 controller today. The 6381 has all the neat features you guys spoke about. Twice the price but from what your saying, I'll be happier in the long run. Guess I'll have to replace that long face plate.

thanks and regards

Joe
