Howdy

Im ready to purcase a simple setup to control an
overhead light.

PCSS1L/S-600 light switch
ir543 infrared reciver

now my question is...
I have a sony rm2100 remote. what remote do
i need to program my remote? Also am I missing
anything?

Your Sony should have the X10 code base available in its standard library, normally listed as an Aux. device.

The two items you listed will get you started, but you will need a maxi controller PHC02 $15.80) to program your PCS switch. You should also download the SceneMaster master-programming manual from the PCS site, as the included instructions stink.
