I tried to install a WS467 switch on some low voltage outdoor light. The lighting uses a 300 watt transformer. I could not get the switch to work right, and the transformer made a loud humming noise. Will this type of lighting work with an x-10 switch??? Also does anyone know a good site to order x-10 swiches?

Thanks Scott

You need a switch rated for inductive loads (if dimming is required) AND the transformer must be a coil wound inductive transformer not an electronic type. Electronic transformers can not be dimmed and must be turned on and off with an appliance switch. It is best just to use an appliance switch on outdoor lights. Try my link below.

Some electronic transformers (dimmable) work very good with dimmer, but no one work with WS467. X-10 dimmer must me with ground wire, two - wire dimmer like WS467 or WS12 can't work with electronic transformers.

Every electronic transformer I have tried to dim ended up burning up the triac's in the dimmer switch. They work for a while but all have met the same fate. I do not risk it, but there may be some applications where it works, I have not come across it. Any others out there have any luck?

Bill,

Supposedly, there are compact fluorescent lights being made by GE, Philips and a few others, that are specifically designed to be dimmed by a typical triac dimmer, like those used in every X-10 dimmer module. Personally, I've seen folks claiming that these exist, but I've never been able to find one.

I have a hundreds pairs of electronic transformers / X10 dimmers installed, and all of them feel fine. But I can't give advise to You- all of the equipment is 220/230 Volts. But may be it will be usefull to some 220/230 V people

we use german Minitronics E60, E80, E95 and E105,
they work with LD11, PLM21, LM12G, LW10G 220 V dimmers.
I used some Osram (can't remember the type) dimmable electronic transformers with X10 dimmers too, my be You can find 110 V versions of them from Osram Sylvania (US department of german Osram). Please pay attention to "dimmable with electronic dimmers"

And -once more - electronic transformers can't work with two- wire dimmers like WS465(?7) or WS12.
