I want to put a x-10 controler in a location that is the switch for the foyer light next to my front door. I have tree switches there one for the porch light and one for the foyer and one for the light at the top of the stairs. My question is if I replace the foyer switch with the x-10 controller will I still be able to control the foyer light with the x-10 controller? Larry in TN web site for switching diagram got me thinking,[Link: ourworld.compuserve.com] so any help will be great.

Steve,

Let me get this straight:

Currently, you have three light switches at the same place, one for the foyer light, one for the porch light, and one for the stair light?

You want to replace ONE of these light switches (foyer) with an X10 light switch?

No problem! It'll work, and won't affect the other switches.

Thank you,

But... will i be able to control the light that that control switch is replacing? I will be replacing the ohter 2 switches with basic x10 wall switches. I control the lights in that area of the house with the Pronto remote and the ir4040 control. This will allow me to cut on a lamp etc. in the den when i come in the front door with out going across the room to get the Pronto.

Your terminology is vague. What do you mean by "replace the foyer switch with the x-10 controller"?

You can't replace a switch with a transmitter as a transmitter doesn't control a load, it only transmits X10 signals over the powerline. If you remove a switch you must replace it with a receiver.

Unless the switch you are replacing is a 3-way switch, and you will be putting a controller where the slave switch would normally be, then no, this will not work. If the switch you are replacing is the only switch then you have two choices.

1) put an inline X10 module in the fixture of one of the three lights and replace that switch with the controller.

2) Cut the hole in the sheetrock bigger to make room for a 4-gang box. You can get a 4-gang retrofit box that has little swing-out ears that do not need to be nailed to the stud. You use it as a guide and cut the sheetrock on the side opposite of the existing stud. This will give you room to pry the existing box away from the stud.

I replaced several of my electrical boxes to add additional space for a controller. I also replaced a single switch that controlled a fan/light with two in-line modules and a controller. It was a real feat to get both of thoses in-line modules in the fan mounting box!

I think you're confusing us and yourself - when you replace a light switch with an X10 light switch, X10 can then control that light. Period. Replace all three light switches with X10 light switches, and X10 can control all of them. Period.

steve j mentions wanting to control a light in the den without using the Pronto *as well as* controlling the foyer light, which, as cowsr4eating describes, is possible, but requires a little extra work.

I like the idea of the inline X-10 module with the in-wall controller enough that I may do that in my house :)
