I was going to use a Inductive Dimmer switch to control a ceiling fan - I have read that this may cause a huming noise - how common is this noise

Thanks

I have heard a lot about it but have not experienced it, I know it does happen though. I have used dimmers on quite a few fans without any problems. The fans have all been better quality fans, the two I have in my house are Hampton Bay's, and they dim without any noise.

Inductive Motor Dimming is incidental and not by design. Most of the higher end fans will actually dim without noise but the standard answer is.. Do not dim fans.

I really want to put a switch in my bedroom that will control my cieling fan, which also has an attached light. I really don't care about controlling this particular light in my room. What wall switch will I need to control this fan with? Also, is the fact that it also has an attached light going to be an issue?

Alexis,

Fan speed is controlled all the time through triac based speed controls. Use an XPDI3 or for higher quality use a PCS 600 watt. All PCS dimmers are inductive.

I am sorry Bill, but as stated in my newest post (Wall Switches for Dummies) I don't know what I am doing. What do you mean my inductive? Thanks.
