I asked this question on the HTM forum, where I thought it belonged, but surprisingly had no responses - so I thought I'd re-post it here and hope for better results...

I would like to get basic X-10 commands programmed into a MX-1000 universal remote (I'm using an IR543 to translate). I know the MX-1000 has a preprogrammed code for X-10 under the AUX device. However, I've customized the page-1 screen for the AUX device to operate my camcorder and the other 3 pages are currently blank/empty. I've also punched through the volume functions from the TV to the MX's hard button volume keys, again for camcorder use.

My question is, if I try to use the preprogrammed code 183 to get X-10 commands into my MX-1000, what will happen to my camcorder functions on page-1? If I create a new virtual keypad on page-2, will the preprogrammed commands automatically map to those new virtual buttons? I guess the larger question is, does anyone know how the preprogrammed X-10 commands are mapped to the MX-1000?

Or am I doomed to have to buy a "cheap" universal remote that has a preprogrammed X-10 command set in order to "learn" the X-10 commands to my MX-1000? Ideally, I'd like to have all X-10 commands, including on & off, bright & dim to operate off of virtual buttons on the remote. But I've heard that some of these "cheap" remotes can't teach the MX the X-10 codes. Is there one out there that others have found that works, for sure?

I'd sure appreciate someone familiar with X-10 and the MX-1000 to take a crack at helping me here... thanks!

I can't answer your specific questions about the MX1000. As for cheap X-10 compatible remotes, there shouldn't be any issue with the MX1000 learning from them. The only issue is that the X-10 brand remotes lack the capability to send unit codes 11-16 in IR mode (OK in RF mode). If you can live with that limitation, X-10's 6-in-1 remote can be had for something on the order of $19.95. Sometimes you can get one for free, as part of a special offer from X-10. Or, you could step up to a One 4 All remote, that has the 11-16 unit capability. I believe there is a Radio Shack branded One 4 All, that goes for $30 or so and has X-10 capability.
