I read somewhere you should not use a dimmer switch for a fan. What should you use?

You have three basic choices:

1. Switch with a relay- no dimmer, audible thunk when operated

2. Non-dimming switch without relay- no dimmer but silent operations (PCS or Switchlinc)

3. Inductive dimming switch- allows speed control but most fan motors will buzz, some quite loudly, even when set for full speed.

I use option #2 with PCS switches for all my ceiling fans.

Larry,
Do you have a part # or know where to get the switches you mentioned in #2.
Thanks, JB

I use the PCS SS1F/S-5. It's $62.50 from www.homeautomationnet.com. You'll find them on this page of their web site: [Link: homeautomationnet.com]

You could also use the Switchlinc 2383 for $89.95 or 2385 for $49.95. Either of which are available from www.smarthome.com. You'll find them on this page of their web site: [Link: smarthome.com]

The 2383 gives you scene and two-way capability, the SS1F/S has scenes but no two-way and the 2385 has neither scenes nor two-way.
