My house is close to 3000 sq.ft. and some of my lamp modules do not respond to the transmitter even though they are on the same phase of the house wiring. I have added a 0.1uF cap to breaker box to couple the phases but this doesn't help.
I have alot of electronic devices in the house (computers, home theater, etc) which I've heard will load down the X10 signals.

I have 2 questions:
1) Will the X10 coupler/repeater boost the signal to both phases of the house wiring?
2) I've found 3 models of coupler/repeaters:
a) XPCR ($110 at homeautomation.net)
b) 4820 ($200 at smarthome)
c) 4820X ($160 at smarthome)
Will the XPCR work just as well as the higher priced units?

Thanks!

Steve,

With that size of house you'll definitely want an amplified coupler. I'd go with the XPCR and you might want to think about a whole-house surge protector at the same time since you're going to have the CB panel open.

Besides an amplifier, you will also probably want to filter all of those noisey devices - you can buy a signal analyzer to see which are the worst offenders but it might be easier just to put filters on all of them.

Cheers, Jim.

Steve,

Have a look at the ACT CR230, [Link: act-solutions.com] I just got these in and they look real nice. I would say they are a notch up from the CR230 at around the same price. I have them in my database but not yet in the text.

Thanks Bill! the ACT Cr230 did the trick. It was easy to install, reasonably priced, and works great with my IR543.

SteveL, thanks for the feedback. A lot of times the thread goes dead without knowing what happened. ( We had a discussion at work about this because I have a house a little bigger plus I've got x10 on 110V in the yard that is another 150 feet out and it still works.)

It seems that distance is not a problem with X10. In theory they can tranmit over a mile in idel conditions. The real problem is loading. If your home has alot of electronic devices with transformers (PC, digital clocks, video games, stereo, etc) the impedence of the 110v power line will be very low. This produces a heavy load on the X10 transmitter and the signal may not exceed the 100mV minimum required by the receivers.

The repeater/couplers are designed for this and can output 5V or more.
