I have been bitten by the X10 bug and have started adding switches to several areas in the house. I know from this forum, that I have to have a coupler to make things work on both sides. Is there a place where I can go to learn more on how to add this to my system? I am a Computer Geek not an Electrician so I need to have it explained in detail....

Couplers essentially put the x10 signal on both legs of your electrical system. they are widely available at smarthome.com and many other websites for about $40. They are easy to install even for a non-electrician. If you are seriously 'bitten', check out the newsgroup comp.home.automation - a deja search should bring up more than you ever wanted to know about couplers, including how to build one yourself. It will also keep you up to date on what others in the x10 universe are doing. Have fun!!!

I saw one someplace that plugged into the dryer socket, then the dryer plugged into it. Simple install. Anyone have experience with these?

Deane - Smarthome sells a device similar to what you mention - I believe that it costs more than one installed at the breaker box although installation is easier. It might be a good choice for someone living in an apartment because of the ease of installation and 'de-installation'.

No personal experience here - I have a coupler/repeater installed near the main panel.

Cheers, Jim.

the one you could buy at [Link: homeautomationnet.com] comes with installation instuctions. Not really to hard to do. Took at all of 15 minutes and sovled some random reliability problems. If you have never done any wiring or are completely in the dark on the subject may be better to have it installed by electriction. If you would like email me and will discuss further.
