Does anyone have any ideas about duplicating the slick rf color touchpads like Phast and Creston have for cheap? Those things are going for $9,000 each! IR is great but I'd rather not have to point in the general direction of a repeater.

How about a PDA with home networking wireless protocol interfacing with a PC home automation controller? Anyone done this?

Paul,

I can sell you a Crestron between $2350 and $3000 depending on what you need. The PDA'sdo work but they are clumsy as remotes, the IR is on the wrong end. Do a search on the forums if you want to go that way a lot of folks love them.

How does programming the Crestron work? I was under the impression it had to be done by a dealer.

You can get the software but it is not something a novice would try. The software was designed to be used by trained installers, and is not user friendly. I have to do some basic programming to be able to sell it to a user. From there we would have to take this off line.

There is also the Omni Remote plug-in for the Handspring Visor. This one puts out plenty of the right wavelength IR, compared to the normal very weak and not quite the right wavelength, built-in IR emitters on PDAs. I don't know if it's released yet, but the Omni Remote has the capability to send RF, in addition to IR. And yes, it can send X-10 RF protocol and anything else on the 310MHz frequency (418MHz Europe?), like X-10 security codes and the like.

There is one difference between Pronto and Crestron - Pronto has no feedback. Is is very important.
