I need to switch six 58 watt fluorescent lights on. But the appliance plug-in module makes a loud click. I cannot use the silent lamp module as its only 300 watts max (fluorescents draw loads on start up then settle back)as this exceeds 300 watts on start-up!. any ideas. (UK voltages) thanx......

Have you thought of in-wall switches? There's some fairly silent ones.

There are in line x10 switches for flourescents. I don't know if they make noise or not, but being wired into the wall or ceiling should make it quieter. Try smarthome.com.

The PCS in-wall switches are silent. They have them for flourecent loads as well as dimming and inductive. Bill www.homeautomationnet.com

I don't think any of these options are any use in the UK.
The X-10 wall switch I have clicks as loud as an appliance module and I don't think special X-10 fluorescent switches, or PCS switches are available in 230V 50Hz versions. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)
I have often wondered if it is possible to replace the loud (and probably cheep) relay in the appliance modules/wall switch with a quieter, higher quality one. Has anyone ever done this?

The ACT switches are very quiet and they are coming out with a line sold by some European company that goes in your switch box an uses the existing switch to trigger on and off. In the meantime I posted this link yesterday, it has some neat stuff for the 240 volt market if your willing to tinker. [Link: geocities.com]good luck! Bill www.homeautomationnet.com

Problem solved!
I ended up making a small MDF box filled with polystyrene balls. I wrapped the appliance switch in bubble wrap. Then put the box in the suspended ceiling!
