That can cause problems but, in this case, the program is triggered when Steve presses a button on the IR543. That doesn't sound like IR interference.

The CFL doesnt cause a problem until a button is pressed on a the 543 the Talkback LED is out then if I press a button it stays lit. If I turn the bulb off works fine again.

And anyone who is familar with IR distribution would know that CFLs are a problem. Thats why they make CFL immune sensors.

OK, doesn't really make sense, though. Seems like if the CFL was causing a problem then it would cause a problem regardless of your pushing a button on the top.

In any case, it's easy to test it out by turning off the CFL light.

I don't have any flourescent bulb around.....so I don't believe that's the problem. I talked to Bill @ homeautomation and he is sending me a new IR543. (Great guy and company to deal with)

I had the same problem with my IR543. Occasionally it would simply lock up and light its led until I unplugged the whole thing.

Then I plugged my Sony XBR TV into a noise filter about 4-5 months ago, and I have not had a single lockup since.

Arjen,

That's interesting, and does make sense. The IR543 is trying to transmit but sees what it thinks is other X10 signals so it's waiting for a clear line before it sends it's commands. When you unplug it it forgets that it has commands to send so the light stays out.

I also think it's a noise issue because the dim/bright works (or sometimes works). The dim/bright is a repeating signal. That means that if you hold it down it continues to send a stream without the unit (and other stuff) so it can sometimes get thru. I've noticed that when the treadmill is running (my noise problem) I can get a dim/bright to usually work as long as I've sent a previous command to that light before the treadmill is fired up. It's the nature of the bright/dim X-10 signal.

Wow, I've been away for a while, and saw this pile of responses to my original post! I've tested this thing six ways to Sunday, on a clean circuit, everything else unplugged, no CFL's in my house. It's definitely the unit. The odd thing is sometimes it locks up, other times it jumps to the high order adresses (13-16). If no other transmitters are on the circuit, then what could cause that but a faulty unit? Beats me. I hope Bill will allow me to try one more (he's been absolutely great about this - both units are on the way back Bill!). If the third doesn't work, I'll have to look for some anomoly in the wiring. Unfortunately, the Pronto that I got my wife for Christmas is still sitting on my desk waiting for the X10 interface so I can control my no-discrete Toshiba gear!!!!!!

Ed,

I wish you would send one of the two defective units back so I can do my own testing on it. You are going to have eventually for credit.

Bill,

I thought the units were sent a ways back - they were boxed up and ready to go, but I found out the wife hadn't sent them. However, both were definitely sent back earlier this week. I sent a description of the problems. If the one works after you get it, I'd like to chat with you offline to determine if my house is possessed! :-)

So what was the final verdict on this? Ed? Bill?

Thanks,

The one was bad the other was described as flaky. One was bad the other worked, but guess what, it went back also, really can’t risk selling it again. Bottom line in this case was, third times a charm. Our total count still stands at 3 or 4 bad for a LOT of IR543's sold.

Alexis Guillen, the pyramids that I have seem to have really bad IR recieving so I only use them to control my mp3 playing from other rooms. For $40 for two I just wanted the better reliability of the I543s. Maybe not needed two that much but works well for me. By the way they both still work great.

Helevitia,
I haven't looked in on this forum in a while - sorry for the delay. Yes, one was DOA and the other was "flaky", as I told Bill. Apparently he tested it and it was working fine (during the test). As Bill said, the third one works beautifully, in the same exact setup as the other two that did not work. Using it with the Pronto and couldn't be happier (well, I could be happier if the IR543 covered multiple house codes!).

BTW - I tried to let this originally negative thread die, making subsequent positive comments in another thread to keep this one from perking up to the top. It looks like a long thread about the design of the IR543, which it is not.
