I'd like to hear how you guys have configured your remote to deal with devices that have both transport AND navigation commands, such as a DVD player. I tried several things, but am not yet satisfied (but then, I am DARN picky).

1. Macro: Click-and-hold button test
A click sent the navigation commands, a hold (0.3 seconds) sent the transport commands. I found the result too slow: navigating the menu got cumbersome (often click too fast, and have to click again).

2. Macro: send both commands
Tried to eliminate the overhead of the button test by simply issues both commands, first the arrow navigation, then the transport command. Set repetition to 0. Worked, but result was worse then above. I gues the time needed to send the transport command is longer than the button test overhead.

3. Transport on touchscreen.
Obviously, this works well. I settled on this for now. Left the navigation assigned to hard button arrows...seemed the most natural place for them. But since I use the transport functions quite often, I'd prefer to have them under hard buttons.

4. Use keypad for transport or navigation.
Works well too, but is not SOAK proof (Significant Other and Kid).

5. Create a separate page for navigation.
Jump to that page when entering a navigation mode (menu or setup). Used this method at first, but always forgot to manually exit the navigation page.

Any other suggestions? Do macros work well for you guys?

Arjen, ahhh...told ya so... :-)

I've actually been using your original method (the page jump to a "menu mode") and, as I had suspected, I too forget to go back to the "normal" mode sometimes. However, I'm getting better about it and I think this is going to be the best method for me.

Hard transport controls are very important to me because all my TV watching is either a DVD or TiVo. Especially for the TiVo, I need fast response from the transport commands so I'm sure the other methods would be much worse for my viewing.
