Realized too late that by replying to DJs thread I messed up the intention of that thread being his adventure only...sorry DJ:)

Anyway, got my T2. No quality problems for me, knock on wood (I guess). Here's my take on the T2.

Summary
The T2 is an excellent remote for people that prefer the "eyes-closed" operation of hard-button remotes, but do not want to deal with funky labeled miscellaneous functions. You get hard buttons for all your common functions, for the rest you simply create buttons on the LCD. There is little this remote can not do.

Software
One word: Excellent. Very intuitive, flexible and stable.

Programmability
Again excellent. With the LCD you can do anything, buttons, macros, prompts, menus, whatever. The hard buttons can be programmed on click, double-click and hold. They can all contain different macros in each device mode, if you wish. A device mode is determined by seperate "pages" on the LCD (each with optionally multiple screens). An example of T2 power: in the DVD mode/page you use the arrow pad for transport control. If you press the DVD menu button, you simply set up the remote to jump to an identical mode/page in which the arrow pad functions as DVD navigation. On traditional remotes you would have to use the shift key to get the second function of the arrow pad within one device mode.

LCD
Good touch sensitivity, good contrast even in daylight. The backlight does whine a bit. The small size of the LCD is a blessing and a curse: it avoids making the remote too large to hold in one hand, but it also reduces the available screen real-estate per menu. I like the size of the LCD, but would have preferred a higher resolution.

Case
Very sturdy. Don't drop this baby on your toe, you will regret it (but the remote will be fine:). I do find this remote quite large. Tall, to be exact. It will be prominently present on your coffee table. But despite its size, you can quite comfortably hold it in one hand. I can use one hand to operate the arrow pad (transport), volume, channel, mute and power buttons, but prefer to use my other hand for the number pad and the LCD.

IR Learning
"If at first you don't succeed, try again. And again". This is one picky remote in the IR learning department. I eventually got all my commands learned, but it was tricky for some remotes. The T2 seems to prefer strong signals, and for some remotes there may only be one exact location of alignment that will work, don't you dare move it a millimeter. But nonetheless, it learned all my remotes.

Price
Ridiculous. I must be out of my mind. Quite seriously.

Overall
GREAT remote. Certainly the best I have tried. I flirted with the Pronto, but the hard buttons make all the difference to me. Will I keep it? Not sure....have a few more days to see if I can get past the size...and the price.

Hey, Arjen, "mi aventura es su aventura", to rephrase an old Spanish proverb or whatever :-).

Rooaaaar!!!

Still had a range of home automation stuff to program. Some off-brand no-name IR dimmers, and an IR controlled sun-screen. Can't get the T2 to see the signal. Worked fine on a Marantz RC2000 (not on the Pronto). I suppose I could install new dimmers, but the screen...

Don't go changing gear.

Contact RTI, in the manual it says that they will learn commands for you if you send them in the "donor" remote if you are unable to learn the commands.

See page 90 of the manual. So there is hope for the hard to learn equipment.

I have never seen that in anybody else's manual.

Hmm, I'd be happy to send them my TA-E9000ES remote, but I'm not that much of a sadist :-)

Arjen,

I had the same thought on using a page jump on a "guide" command for both my DVD and my TiVo so that I could use the cursor keys as transport keys in normal mode and as cursor keys in "menu" mode. However, it occurs to me (I haven't actually tried mine out yet -- see my battery thread...) that there is no reliable way to automatically jump back to the transport mode.

Both the DVD player and the TiVo box can have multiple levels of menus so you can't just jump back to the transport page when "select" is pressed (you may just be going to another menu where you need the cursor keys).

Of course, you could use the "exit" button to get you back, but that's an extra keypress that doesn't do anything with the AV equipment -- just the remote. While I think I can probably get used to this, I imagine it will drive my wife batty.

Have you actually set yours up? Did you handle this problem in some clever way I haven't thought of?

ebr,

Wish I could cue you in on some magic trick...but in my case I decided to go for the Exit button. Compared to the trickery you have to go through on other universal remotes, this was a compromise I could live with.

Rob,

Haven't given up yet. Still think this is the best remote I have seen so far. Did find one other "issue": in my room the T2 doesn't like a 45 degree angle or more. Distance is no problem.

We'll see.

Well....got myself a Marantz RC2000mkII, just to make a final comparison between hardbutton only and the button-LCD combo of the T2.

I am sticking with the T2. It is SO much easier and more versatile in programming. And evenhough it is taller, the mII is pretty wide, and top-heavy. It is umcomfortable to hold, and the LDC display is hard to read. But it is certainly a powerful remote.

I just got a demo T2 from RTI(Dave) to see how cool it is.(I work for a Custom A/V company)
I got the demo RF unit that Daniel used in his review it works great in my theater and anywhere in the basement and most of the first floor but it is not a whole house remote..
This remote(so far) has answered every question in my book......SIMPLE..YES(operation and setup)COOL..YES,YES
RETAIL VALUE...EXCELLENT BANG FOR BUCK...BEST BY FAR
I sell the RC5000 and the Pronto and the AV2000 but those remotes are in a different league(the minors and the T2 is the enrty level for the Majors)
I sell the Niles Intellicontrol(nice unit).BUT,BUT,,,
What if someone has 2 tv's a projector,cd,dvd,dss,2,vcrs,ld,dss music, tuner, cable box, aspect ratio toggle button, front door camera, back door camera, audio feed from main house music system..........
I know alot of people who want it all and have it all and can't run any of it.........
The niles(how many buttons are on it and what do they say??????????
The T2 RF..YES Touchscreen...Yes handle running 25 components...Yes IR for that bar tv in the back of the theater by the pool table.......YES

Hehehehe......good for you!

Now that I decided to keep it, I actually like it even more. Took the Marantz remotes back to the AV store and showed them the T2....they easily understood why I returned the RC2000 and the RC5000 :)

What's wrong with it....not much. But it is not perfect for everyone. I for one would have preferred to see additional hard buttons for transport (need it in DVD mode). And center & rear volume would have been nice. And oh yeah, make it smaller despite the extra buttons :)
