Hi,

Recently my IRF-6 has been stopping responding to RF signals. Is this a signal that its dealth is near?

Sometimes the red LED stays lit and jiggling the antenna made it a little better. I have the high gain antenna.

I would like to wait for the new replacement IRF-6 to come out. Will it be compatible with the old remotes?

Thanks,

I had the same problem. The led would lock up. I called RTI service. I sent the remote and the IRF to them for repair. The IRF was fine nothing was wrong. He send there are some different firmwares for the IRF. I guess mine was alright. Mine LCD was going bad on the bottom part. He replaced the LCD and upgraded the firmware on the remote. Now my system has never been better. I actually have a problem of it being to sensitive and turning on equipment or running a macro with only light touch on the LCD. It was a great improvement. It cost about $50 plus shipping $15 to repair the units.

Just call service and be nice. He told me the new units were compatible with the old ones. Repair your unit and add more when you need them.

Sounds like you have a short in the antenna wire, The IRF-6 is rather sturdy, the antenna wire and fittings are not. So you could send it back, or simply modify the antenna wire and mount as I have described in the past for better performance, which besides boosting performance, would also probably fix your problem.

Re: Unwanted activation of equipment or macros: Add a small time delay to the functions or a double click via the programing software. I had the same problem, turning everything off when I touched the screen unintentionally. Now my "all off" button has a two second delay before it activates. KDM

Hey David,

Was your remote under the 90 day warranty? I was told today by RTI there was no repair option for my T2 or IRF-6. I could purchase exchanges for $200 and $160 respectivly.

I would guess that my problem is just my IRF-6 but since it is intermittent what if it is interference from something else in my house??

This is a common and well know problem, and can be fixed very easily by modifying the IRF-6.
RTI has no in house repair for this problem yet, but I am sending them information on how to do the repair.

You can do the modification yourself, if you are savvy with a soldering pencil, or if you are not, I can do it for you. Actually I am on modification version 3 which is a little more complicated to perform than the previous upgrades. Just send me an e-mail for the details.

David,

I don't know why they told you $160-200 for exchange. That is what I was told in an email. I called RTI and spoke to a service tech. My unit was over 2 years old so out of warranty. My LCD was bad and I had the locking up problem. I too was able to play with the antennae and unplug the IRF but then it keep happening. I sent both the T2 and the IRF in for evaluation. The IRF was fine and nothing was done. The T2 had a new LCD and and new firmware installed. They told him it was only 20 minutes work and he charged $50 plus $15 for shipping. This repair was done in November or December 2003.

I have read about all these modifications and I have considered this but I cannot do this kind of work.

I still don't understand why they told you it can't be repaired. Sorry for my ignorance but my problem sounded similar and it was the T2 and not the IRF that needed repair.

Actually, I seem to remember seeing this problem a few years ago, as I recall it was not the IRF-6 it was an intermittently sticky button on the remote. When the red light stays stuck on, do the all of 6 green leds on the side of the IRF-6 stay on also?

When this happens, take the battery off the remote while watching the lights on the IRF-6, if they go off you probably have a sticky button. You can easily fix this by cleaning the contact points very gently with a q-tip with a little alcohol on it, (take the battery off first) or you can get a new button membrane sheet these were readily available last time I checked and they were not expensive.

Sorry I did not think of this before.

Further Note, I have also encountered remotes that had non functional buttons, the cause for this was that when the machine punched out the cellophane that surrounds the contact points for the buttons, some of the cut out pieces of cellophane fell out from under the main sheet back into the original holes, which of course would negate any electrical contact. They are hard to see also you have to look close. You can flick out the little pieces with tweezers.

RTI Installer,

You know what, I had a replacement set of buttons since some had worn away and it seems to have fixed the remote!! What an awesome resource!

Now I am thinking about having my remote hot rodded by you but then I won't have it for 3 or 4 days :) Maybe next time I go on vacation!

I also had a theory that one of my batteries was bad and that was causing the problem to come and go... Anyone ever seen that?
