I just bought a house and bought the a/v equipment that came with it. Included was an RTI TC2 remote. As of now, it's programmed to control the receiver, an Apple TV, and a bluray player. It doesn't even turn on the tv. I looked into reprogramming it but apparently it can only be reprogrammed by a dealer. Even for something as simple as changing the FM presets. Am I missing something here? Is this device really not capable of configuration by the end user?

No its not.

Buy a logitech harmony. That's for end users.

It has been debated over and over and over. It's the way it is and move on.

Besides the dealer only software, you would also need the original project file to make any changes to the system. So, if you decide to have an RTI dealer re-program that remote, they will be starting from scratch.

If the previous dealer did not password protect all of the configurations they can be recovered by the next dealer.

Custom remotes like the RTI put consumer DIY remotes to shame in capability.

My 6yo daughter can operate every electronic in the house b/c it just makes sense. Push 1 button and a bazillion things happen to make the "Amazon Video" button work.

* Turn on the Projector
* Turn on the Receiver
* Turn the Receiver to the right AV Input
* Turn the HDMI Matrix switch to the right input & Output
* Start the Amazon App on the Roku
* Close the blinds
* Dim the lights
* Set the volume to a level that isn't going to cause granny a heart attack
* Etc

I have a hard time believing harmony is going to get this right, 100% of the time.

Personally I got tired of my wife calling me at work saying.. I have daughters BFF over and we can't get XYZ to come on.

Depending on what you're controlling, custom control can be justified if its worth it to you.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Now the RTI seems to have died completely, so it might be time to get something else or just use the existing remotes. The RTI was only used to control A/V in a single room anyway so it doesn't seem necessary for this application.
