The processing speed is a lot faster, if it's in the budget, it's definitely worth doing.

Imagine if Apple create a phone, let's call it the iPhone, let's say they get to model number 5. But they want to create a newer faster iphone 5 but keep it in the same case, I think they will probably call it the iPhone 5s. I think the s stands for speedier.

But in seriousness if you are a dealer you should only be able to buy the S model unless your looking at getting one second hand or upgrading a client from the older to the newer model.

Yesterday I had to replace a failed XP-8 with an XP-8s. This was a no down time situation, repair turnaround could not be tolerated.

ID offered an easy migration and system response was noticeably faster. I'll want to adjust some of my delays because they were carefully trimmed using the XP-8. Now, some of the macros run too fast.

Edit: Fixed the typo's.

Are the ZP-8 and the ZP-8s new units?

This is an old thread, but I wondered how much the improved speed of the 8S provides is important.  I have a XP-3 (which seems to have the same processor as the XP-8S but with less RAM etc.), but I'm going to need to buy multiple Ethernet to RS-232 devices, and I therefore wonder if it makes sense to pick up a cheap used XP-8 instead of adding onto the XP-3.  Thoughts?  Thanks!

Its a noticeably faster CPU than the XP8. Unless you need all the extra relays, ports etc. i think that you would be fine with the XP-3 if you are only adding a few IP drivers. the biggest concern is how much Memory your project will need.. I don't believe that the XP3 has expandable memory (ive yet to use one) and is limited to the 128 Megs on board which is probably (I'm guessing of course) enough. The biggest hogs in any project as far as memory is concerned is going to bet the GUI for iPads, iPhones, Android etc..Here is a recent project image of the memory consumption with some decently hefty iPad and iPhone GUI.
Depending on the size of the project, the XP-3 may be the way to go.

Thanks, Tony.  This is helpful.

How much memory does that system take?  The XP-3 looks like it has pretty good horsepower but lacks the array of RS-232.  Based on your thoughts, I guess I should just get some of the ESC-2+ units to get me the needed RS-232.

That’s what I would do, the ESC units are pretty cheap and if the project doesn’t need all the extra connection ports, this is a lot cheaper then getting an XP8-S, but you still get to keep the superior processing. It makes a pretty big difference in performance with 2-way drivers for sure.
I think I was at around 28 to 30 megs memory usage and I was clocking about 30 to 35% CPU usage at peak. This is was my first RTI system since the days of the RP6 and the T2C, I must say I was pretty impressed with the performance I got... GUI responsiveness and overall feel. Not really a fan of the KX 7 or 10,... resistive touchscreens work well as handhelds, but I don’t like them as an I wall option. I’ll probaly use iPads in future projects as the GUI runs soo smooth.
