Hey all,

Lots of great information on these forums. I am just starting out with remote systems and have a question that might seem very simple to you guys.

I am building software for a media player to do basic digital signage. I want to allow an RTI dealer to program controls to Play,Pause,Next, Prev my video player. My software will sit on a media player that has RS232 slots/USB and ethernet.

Current Remote is RK3-V 3.5(Links at bottom) but looking to upgrade to either RK1+ or KX2.

The remotes say that they can do USB and ethernet programing(Assuming Rs232 also for RK3). So how do I go about setting up my software to communicate with an RTI remote to allow this functionality?

Do I just provide a datasheet to the RTI dealer saying you can send commands to this port(XXX) via ethernet and here are the commands you can use to interact? Then just have a thread waiting for incoming commands?

RS232: Still new to this but would I just give the dealer a datasheet explaining how my pins are setup and the commands to send?

Ethernet: Is there a standard setup or an example of what I would provide to an RTI dealer? Can I just setup a listner on a specific port and give them the port ## and commands to send? Or can I setup a local webservice and then they can just do an http POST.

USB: No idea for this one? Any idea's? Assuming it should be some sort of serial communication and the device would show up as a COMM.

If someone can point me in the right direction, Universal Remote Client Programming For Dummies, that would be great!

Thanks Guys.

Most equipment that can be controlled by RS232, typically have a data sheet with pin out, baud rate etc along with the commands.

from there RTI programmers will use one of the processors, which will spit out the RS232 codes based on a trigger code from a remote. So you don't have to worry about which remote someone may use.

If you want to get fancy, you can create a "driver" for your Media device and do all this work for the RTI dealers. This will help get them on board using your equipment a lot faster. I assume you would have to contact RTI directly to find out more about how to do this, although there are a number of people possibly here and on the RTI forum site that can create drivers for you.
Ip control would require you to make a driver as well.

Good luck with your quest...

You should also know that the Rti keupads can not directly send an IP or rs232 command. You need some form of Rti processor to do this. Xp series for Ip control

Awesome information guys! Thanks.

Did not not about the RTI processor, that will help.

So media player would hook upto an rti processor and the rti processor will communicate with their remote device.

So I understand the RS232 part, I found the BenQ command sheet on these forums and seems straight forward enough to program.

Still not sure about USB or IP communication and how I would implement those.

Actually, the remote device (handheld, in wall etc) will communicate with the processor which will then send commands out to the various devices that are being controlled.

The only USB communication is you downloading the program you write into the processor and the keypad/remote. Then you can also send the program IP if these devices are on the network which I assume you'd want them to be to IP control something.

Now any processor allows one way rs232 control, but you need an xp series processor for two way rs232 and IP control of devices. If their is not an xp driver for the devices you are looking to control then you would use the two way strings driver to send ip commands and try to gain feedback if needed. You could easily send one way rs232 or again use this driver to try and gain feedback from a device. Remember only xp processors can use drivers or do any IP control.
