The Apple TVs all respond differently to each system, there are some codes in the IR database but you may have to edit them a little. Best bet is to use the RTI IRPRO IR learner and capture them.

Kind of hard to do when you are not an RTI dealer...

I have done a ton of Apple TV's and never had any issues with the basic codes available.

I have definitely had to learn apple TV codes in before. I have a separate IR library with them listed by customer name... I used to try to go through and test previously learned sets for new apple tvs that the default library codes didnt work on but gave up and just learn new...
Mind you probably 3/5 or 4/5 work with the codes from RTI library.

The problem is that once the original remote is 'paired' to the Apple TV, you then have to do as Alex has done and have a library listed by the customers name. If you are setting the ATV up from new, use the codes in the library and you'll be fine.

Ah I always wondered what caused this to sometimes work and sometimes not! Is their a way to unpair the remote if it's already paired?

I think you go to Settings > General > Remote, then it's something along the lines of holding 2 buttons down similtaneously to pair the new remote. I don't think that you can actually 'unpair' the remote, it's pairing a new remote. Which we can't do (hold 2 buttons down) with RTI, hence learning the clients remote.
