i am an end user and my installer is wanting to sell me an extra remote control for 900 dollars plus tax and programming of $230 also. so i'm just trying to sort out if adding a remote at close to a $1,200 cost is most cost effective, or trying to figure this thing out with an ipad2 which i already have will save me some $$? that's all it comes down to is saving money. if i'm spending more than i'm saving, i'm heading the wrong direction. so it's a thousand dollar question. if i have the ipad2 already, am i going to save by trying to use it or do i need to just pony up and pay the $1,200 to have an extra remote?? You guys have my head spinning and i'm in deep with technology here so i wanted to get back to simplifying the explanation so you could possibly chime in again..........any takers??

Quick answer. The iPad makes a great large surface controller but in my opinion makes a better whole home control surface as it is not a sit and be lazy channel surfing hand held remote control. And even though you can turn off the ipad time out it can still disconect from the RTI system if it is left idle for a while. This requires a few seconds wait time while it reconects. Otherwise it is fine.
You must have an RTI processor with "XP" as the first two letters of its title other wise you can not use an iPad.
you must have an active Network connection to your XP processor tied to an active wifi network in your home.
Finaly, you must purchase an iPad app license from your dealer and pay for his iPad programing time.
Provided you already have an XP processor, the iPad may be a lower cost soluton for you. This does of course hinge on how complex you want the programing to be.

The XP3 has a 433Mhz 2.4Ghz antennae built in! If the remote is a 433Mhz one then he would need a RM433. Do you not use RTI products edited because I'm an idiot that needs to go double check some things before I open my fat mouth!! :)
