I am trying to sort out how to use these (out of the box) connectors (male) on a JVC DLARS55U (Also a male port). I inserted a gender changer, but the serial commands still don;t work. I am concerned that since they are both male I will need a crossover cable. If this is the case the installation will look pretty redneck with the connector, a gender changer, and a cross over on the same connection?
Any thoughts on cleaning up, or if my assumptions above are off, a little guidance would be greatly appreciated
- Matt

Okay....asked and answered.
I spent some time on it. I pulled apart the RTI Cat 5 serial connector and pulled out pin 2 and 3 and swapped them. Voilla! It worked.

Probably needs a null-modem as you suspect. Use a multimeter to figure out the pinout and then you can get some of the cheap "pin-your-own" DB-9 to RJ45 adapters and set that up the way you need it.
[from my notes: db9 pin 2 = RX = whblue = cat5 pin 5 db9 pin 3 = TX = green = cat5 pin 6 db9 pin 5 = GND = blue = cat5 pin 4]

PeterN has it right. JVC typically use a Null Modem adapter.

I use a null modem adapter. Quick and easy.
It might even mention needing one in the driver info.
